One roadster, with changes that matter.

An S2000 already gives you a front-engine, rear-drive layout and double wishbones at each corner. A replacement kit needs to work with that geometry. We'd start by checking the existing arms, mounts and adjustment hardware, then decide how much height and damping control the car needs.

The current range spans fixed-damping Bilstein B14, adjustable BC Racing and TEIN kits, and AST and MOTON systems with separate damping controls. More adjustment means more setup decisions. Match those controls to the measurements and changes you expect to make.

Honda introduced the S2000 in 1999 and announced the end of production for June 2009. By the end of 2008, Honda recorded 110,673 sales worldwide, including 19,987 in Europe. The front-engine, rear-drive roadster kept its six-speed manual and two-seat open body through that production run.

The European 2004 update retained a 2.0-litre engine. Honda revised the suspension, rear geometry and body bracing, and fitted 17-inch wheels in place of the earlier 16-inch arrangement. A later bumper does not, by itself, establish a 2.2-litre engine or a particular supplier application.

The US received a 2.2-litre engine for the 2004 model; Japan's 2.2-litre update went on sale in November 2005. European final-edition cars still used a 2.0-litre engine in 2009. Keep the original market, actual chassis identification and build date together when ordering parts, particularly for an imported or converted car.

Early UK 2.0-litre cars

Use the current range as a starting point for an early UK car, then confirm the build date and exact kit. TEIN's British 2000–2003 rows are explicit; a 1999 car needs its own check. Record both front and rear tyre sizes and any changes to the arms or mounts.

Facelift UK 2.0-litre cars

The European 2004 facelift kept the 2.0-litre engine while changing the chassis settings and wheels. BC Racing, Bilstein, AST and MOTON provide the starting listings here. The TEIN rows need an exact application check: their AP2 wording must not be treated as proof that a UK facelift has a 2.2-litre engine.

Japanese imports

Japan's 2.2-litre update arrived in November 2005. Earlier Japanese cars and later AP2 cars have distinct TEIN rows. Tell us the chassis, build date, engine and grade, including Type V or Type S where relevant, so the application can be checked without borrowing UK dates.

US-market AP1 and AP2

The US 2.2-litre change was for the 2004 model year. TEIN's US height guidance differs from the British and Japanese rows. Confirm the actual US car and trim, including any Club Racer specification, before choosing a kit or transferring a lowering figure.

Choose usable height and matched damping without adding a setup dial.

Read the buying advice

Bilstein B14 47-080386 has monotube dampers with fixed damping and height adjustment. It is worth considering if you want the installer to set the height and alignment, then leave the damping alone. Check the kit's application conditions and axle-load limits against the car. The listed lowering range is a working constraint, not a reason to use the lowest setting.

Separate compression and rebound when there is a setup plan to use them.

Read the buying advice

AST 5200 RIV-H1301S provides independent compression and rebound adjustment, with compression controlled at an external reservoir. AST specifies non-inverted units for double-wishbone applications. Discuss spring choice, actual mounts, reservoir locations and service requirements with the installer. Tyres, added equipment and circuit use need to inform the specification; a multi-way damper does not settle those decisions.

Component layout only. Mounts, dimensions and adjusters vary by kit.

Honda describes upper and lower wishbones at each wheel, with coil-over spring and damper units. The rear spring surrounds its damper. This is not the separate rear spring seat found on some other cars, and the damper does not replace a wishbone's job of locating the wheel.

Set height and preload using the exact kit's instructions, then check clearance and alignment through the required suspension movement. A spring-rate number is not the wheel rate: the installation geometry also matters. Do not use a different car's spring and damper settings as the S2000's baseline.

The S2000 is not a MacPherson-strut car. A general claim about camber-adjustable strut top mounts does not establish how camber is adjusted on this double-wishbone application. Confirm the actual arms, mounts and available adjustment on the car.

Understand height and preload
Representative silver Honda S2000 on alignment runways with wheel-carried optical targets based on real equipment references

Make the alignment part of the fitting plan.

Before fitting, inspect the bushes, ball joints, mount condition and alignment adjusters. Agree the intended height and check tyre-to-body clearance through steering and suspension movement. The fitter needs the actual front and rear wheel widths, offsets and tyre sizes, rather than a photograph of the stance you like.

Measure alignment at the final height and retain the printout with the damper settings. If the kit has reservoirs, plan secure mounting and hose clearance. Check access to each adjuster with the final trim and any hardtop or cage in place; electronic adjustment, where compatible, needs its own components.

Wheels, tyres and arch clearance

Honda used different front and rear tyre sizes. A wider wheel or altered offset changes the clearance problem independently of ride height. Give the fitter the complete wheel and tyre combination and check both steering lock and suspension movement before settling the height.

Arms, bushes and adjustment

Check the condition and movement of the existing adjustment hardware before booking the final alignment. If aftermarket arms are fitted, identify them and establish their usable adjustment range. A top-mount description copied from a strut kit is not an alignment plan for an S2000.

Hardtop, cage and engine changes

Record added or removed equipment before discussing springs. A hardtop, cage, engine conversion or substantial aero package changes the setup brief. Confirm the spring specification with the supplier rather than treating the standard catalogue rate as a bespoke answer.

Track preparation and reservoirs

For an open car, check the event's roll-over requirements and the driver's seating position. Plan brakes, tyres and cooling alongside suspension. External reservoirs need secure mounts and protected line routing, with room to inspect them between events.

BC Racing

A-09 has three current configurations: BR RS with rubber mounts, ER two-way with external reservoirs, and ZX. The parent states 10/10 kg/mm springs. Confirm the actual build and mounts; the starting price belongs to the parent range, not every configuration.

Bilstein

B14 47-080386 uses fixed damping; B16 PSS9 48-088657 adds manual damping adjustment. The native applications list approximately 10–35 mm lowering at both ends. Match the car and axle loads to the kit's conditions before choosing a height.

TEIN

FLEX Z VSH64-C1SA3 has 10/10 kgf/mm springs; MONO SPORT GSH64-71SS3 has 12/10. Both use rubber upper mounts and 16-level combined damping adjustment. The confirmed British 2000–2003 rows recommend 15–35 mm lower front and 25–45 mm rear. The later GBR row's 2.2/AP2 wording needs checking against a real UK facelift before using its different height figures.

Questions about Honda S2000 coilovers.

Check the details before choosing your kit.

Which coilover brands are listed for the Honda S2000?

The current range includes BC Racing, Bilstein, AST, MOTON and TEIN. Check the exact part number, configuration and original market on the product page. An AP1/AP2 label is a starting point, not proof that every build and market has the same specification.

Does a facelift UK S2000 have the 2.2-litre engine?

Honda's European 2004 update retained a 2.0-litre engine, and its European final edition still used 2.0 litres in 2009. The US received 2.2 litres for the 2004 model; Japan changed in November 2005. Check the actual chassis and engine rather than relying on a facelift nickname.

Does the S2000 have separate rear springs and dampers?

The factory S2000 uses double wishbones with a coil spring around each damper. Honda describes coil-over spring/damper units at the wheels. Follow the exact replacement kit's instructions for mounts, preload and height.

Will a camber-adjustable top mount set the S2000's camber?

Do not assume so from a generic strut-kit description. The S2000 uses double wishbones, so confirm the actual suspension arms, mounts and alignment adjustment available on the car. Ask for the vehicle-specific hardware specification.

What lowering does TEIN recommend for an early UK S2000?

The British 2000–2003 rows for FLEX Z VSH64-C1SA3 and MONO SPORT GSH64-71SS3 recommend 15–35 mm lower at the front and 25–45 mm at the rear. Those figures belong to those application rows. Different market rows and maximum mechanical ranges must not be substituted.

Can I apply the later TEIN AP2 figures to my UK facelift?

Ask us to check first. The later MONO SPORT GBR row names AP2 and 2.2 litres, while Honda's European facelift retained 2.0 litres. We do not treat that row as automatic approval for a UK facelift or transfer its height figures without checking the actual car.

What is the difference between Bilstein B14 and B16 PSS9?

The listed B14 kit has fixed damping with height adjustment. B16 PSS9 adds manual damping adjustment. Choose whether you need that control, then check the exact vehicle application, load conditions and fitting instructions.

Can I compare the kits by spring rate alone?

No. The spring's installation geometry, damper behaviour, tyres and car weight also affect the result. BC's parent lists 10/10 kg/mm, while the named TEIN kits list 10/10 and 12/10 kgf/mm. Those figures do not establish a handling ranking.

Is electronic damping adjustment included with the TEIN kits?

EDFC is optional on compatible applications. Confirm the correct motors, controller and installation access for the exact car and kit. Compatibility does not mean the electronic components are included.
