SEAT Leon 1P.
The coilover guide.
Shop the coiloversA daily-driven diesel, a quick FR or a Cupra that spends its weekends on circuit: start with the actual front strut and application, then choose how much adjustment you need.
The five-door Leon with a racing chapter.
The Leon 1P can make a useful road and track car without an extreme drop. We would start with the tyres, a sensible ride height and the condition of the existing suspension. Worn bushes or tired upper mounts deserve attention before you start tuning new dampers.
There are several front-strut sizes in this range, and the manufacturers do not all label them the same way. Check the kit's exact reference against the car. An FR or Cupra badge, engine capacity or registration lookup on its own will not settle every fitment detail.
SEAT introduced the second-generation Leon in 2005. Walter de Silva's design hid the rear door handles beside the windows, giving the five-door hatchback a coupe-like outline. Production ran to 2012, with 675,915 cars built across the generation.
The FR joined the range in 2006 with petrol and diesel engines. The Leon also took SEAT to World Touring Car Championship manufacturer and driver titles in 2008 and 2009. For a road-based track build, choose suspension around the car's weight, tyres and use.
Underneath, the 1P has front MacPherson struts and independent multi-link rear suspension. A spring sits separately from each rear damper. Those details matter when matching a front strut clamp and understanding what the rear height adjuster actually changes.

Match the model year, engine and body style before comparing brands.

BC Racing: 49.5 mm
BCR-YF-03 is BC Racing's 49.5 mm front-strut application for the 2005–2012 front-wheel-drive Leon 1P. Keep that manufacturer's measurement attached to the part number. Do not select it just because another brand lists a nominal 50 mm kit.
See the BC 49.5 mm listing
BC Racing: 54.5 mm
BCR-YF-02 is BC Racing's 54.5 mm application for the same generation. Compare the actual BR or RM configuration and its mounts inside the listing. Ask the installer to establish the original strut specification before choosing between YF-02 and YF-03.
See the BC 54.5 mm listing
SPAX / Eibach: 50 mm
These listings explicitly require a 50 mm front strut. SPAX separates engine applications as well as single- and double-adjustable kits. Eibach adds front axle-load limits of 1,035, 1,105 or 1,170 kg, with a 1,000 kg rear limit. Read the exact engine and suspension notes too.
Compare the 50 mm applications
SPAX / Eibach / AST: 55 mm
SPAX and Eibach have 55 mm applications, and AST's Leon 1P rows also specify a 55 mm front strut. Eibach separates front axle-load limits; match the vehicle plate and full kit notes. AST's front top-mount applications require body modifications, so discuss the supplied mounting arrangement with the installer.

Read the buying advice
BC Racing BCR-YF-03 is a named example for the 49.5 mm application. Its selected BR RA configuration uses front pillowball and rear rubber mounts; consider the noise and vibration implications alongside the height and damping adjustment. For a different strut size, start again with the matching part number.
- Match the original front strut
- Consider mount noise and vibration
- Leave travel for rough roads
Choose the controls around your tyres and the amount of road driving the car still does.
Read the buying advice
SPAX RSX3-1688 is a double-adjustable example for the listed 55 mm, 1.6–2.0 Leon application. It separates bump and rebound adjustment. The single-adjustable RSX range takes a different approach. Confirm the precise engine row and work from the supplied starting settings, changing one setting at a time.
- Separate bump and rebound controls
- Match engine and strut conditions
- Record a repeatable starting setup
Separate controls become more useful when the car has a defined tyre, spring and circuit setup.
Read the buying advice
AST 5200 RIV-S2009SD separates rebound and compression, with remote reservoirs. Its Leon 1P entry specifies a 55 mm front strut and notes body modifications when front top mounts are used. The 5300 range adds separate high- and low-speed compression controls. Agree the springs, mount preparation and reservoir access with the installer.
- Independent rebound and compression
- Plan reservoir position and access
- Keep a setup record between sessions
A separate rear spring and damper.
On a standard SEAT Leon 1P, the rear spring and damper are mounted separately.
Component layout only. Mounts, dimensions and adjusters vary by kit.On the standard Leon 1P, the rear spring sits in its own seat in the lower suspension arm. The shock absorber is mounted alongside it. Multi-link describes how the wheel is located; it does not mean the spring must surround the damper.
A factory-style height-adjustable kit puts the rear height adjuster at the spring seat. Moving that adjuster changes spring seating and ride height; a damping dial controls the damper's resistance. They do different jobs.
Confirm the rear arrangement supplied with the chosen part number. Some AST configuration descriptions name a different rear assembly. Do not assume that every Leon kit retains the factory layout, or that a spring-around-damper conversion can use the same mounting requirements.
Understand height and preload
Set the height, then align the car.
Have the fitter inspect the front top mounts, rear spring seats, bushes and joints before installation. The oldest 1P cars have had two decades of use; a worn joint can make a new suspension setup difficult to assess.
Bring wheel width, offset and tyre size to the appointment. Check clearance through steering and suspension movement at the chosen height, including the spring platform, tyre and arch. Set the alignment after the final height has settled and keep the measurements.
Wheels and tyre clearance
A wider wheel or a more aggressive offset can reduce clearance to the arch or suspension. Measure with the actual tyres fitted and check through steering and compression before agreeing the final height.
Engine upgrades and traction
If the car has a remap or other engine work, explain where traction or wheel control is causing trouble. Start with tyres, worn components and alignment; adding damping alone will not cure every power-delivery problem.
Mounts and bushes
Confirm the original parts the kit reuses and which mounts it supplies. A track-focused mount can change noise and vibration as well as geometry, so include that choice in a road-car discussion.
Track preparation
Plan braking and cooling alongside the suspension. Tell us about weight removal, a cage or aero changes before agreeing spring rates, and record the settings used with each tyre.

Questions about SEAT Leon 1P coilovers.
Check the details before choosing your kit.
Does this guide cover the SEAT Leon 1P1?
Yes. The catalogue uses both 1P and 1P1 for second-generation Leon applications. This guide brings those explicit listings together. It does not include the first-generation 1M or third-generation 5F; the exact engine and production dates still need to match the kit.
How do I choose between the different front-strut sizes?
Have the original strut identified using the kit manufacturer's measurement procedure. BC Racing labels its two Leon applications 49.5 and 54.5 mm; SPAX and Eibach use 50 and 55 mm. Do not treat rounded labels, the engine or an FR/Cupra badge as proof that a particular part fits.
Why are there six Eibach Leon entries?
The listed PRO-STREET-S kits combine 50 or 55 mm front-strut requirements with maximum front axle loads of 1,035, 1,105 or 1,170 kg. The rear limit is 1,000 kg. Match the vehicle plate and all application notes to the exact part number.
Does the Leon 1P have a separate rear spring?
Yes. In the standard rear suspension the spring sits in its own seat in the lower suspension arm, beside a separate damper. A factory-style rear height adjuster acts at the spring seat. Confirm the arrangement supplied with any replacement kit.
Will any Leon 1P kit fit my FR or Cupra?
The badge alone is not enough. Match the front strut, engine, production dates, original suspension and any axle-load limits. Tell us about factory or later suspension changes so the precise application can be checked.
How low should I set a road-driven Leon?
Use the exact kit's permitted range and leave enough travel and clearance for your roads, wheels and tyres. Factory-lowered suspension affects the additional drop. Check steering and compression clearance at the final height, then arrange alignment.
What is the difference between SPAX RSX and RSX3?
The listed RSX kits use single adjustment. RSX3 separates bump and rebound controls. Both ranges still have strut-diameter and engine conditions; extra damping controls do not make a kit fit more versions of the car.
Let’s talk suspension.
Tell us the engine, original strut details, wheels and how you use your Leon. We can help check the application and compare the adjustment you need.
