The coilover guide.
Shop the coiloversKeep the mid-engine MR2 usable on the roads you enjoy. Start with the car's market and build date, then compare the mounts, spring rates and damping controls.
A mid-engine coupe with three decades of owner development.
An SW20 can look right with a modest drop and a well-chosen set of wheels. We'd start by checking the old suspension and tyre condition, then agree a height that leaves room for bumps and steering movement. Worn joints or a poor alignment can undermine the changes you're hoping to make.
The current range has BC Racing BR and RM configurations, TEIN FLEX Z and TEIN MONO SPORT. Their spring rates and mounting arrangements differ. The UK TEIN applications also have specific height guidance; an imported car needs its own application check.
Toyota launched the second-generation MR2 in Japan in October 1989 and brought it to the UK in April 1990. Its engine sits behind the cabin and drives the rear wheels. The UK launch range used 2.0-litre 3S-FE and 3S-GE engines; Japan also had the turbocharged 3S-GTE. Keep those market differences attached to the car when checking a suspension application.
The UK range changed during its life. Toyota's archive records revised suspension and larger brakes in 1992, followed by further suspension changes in 1994. A registration year or an owner's revision nickname is only part of the identification: establish the build date and check what is fitted now.
Owner clubs still bring together restored cars and modified examples. Toyota's coverage of the MR2 Drivers' Club national day includes engine-converted cars alongside more original ones. For a suspension discussion, describe any conversion and changes to weight as well as the wheels. A photograph of another MR2 cannot establish the right springs for yours.

UK-market 2.0 SW20
The current TEIN FLEX Z and MONO SPORT listings identify the 1990–1999 2.0-litre SW20. BC Racing C-12 identifies SW20/21 for 1990–1999. These are the starting listings for a UK car; confirm the engine, build date and existing suspension before ordering.

Early cars: check the build date
TEIN's MONO SPORT application warns that Type I cars built from October 1989 to November 1991 can have narrow clearance between the bottom of the damper and the body. Ask us to check the exact application and the installer's clearance assessment before ordering.

Japanese SW20 and Turbo imports
Japanese-market SW20s include naturally aspirated and turbo versions. TEIN publishes separate market rows, so UK height figures and listing scope should not be carried over automatically. Send the chassis details, build date and any engine conversion for an exact check.

US-market SW20 / SW21
BC Racing's C-12 application names SW20/21. TEIN's US rows distinguish 2.0-litre SW20L and 2.2-litre SW21L and have different height guidance from the UK rows. Our MONO SPORT listing is explicitly UK-market; check a US car with us before choosing a configuration.

Read the buying advice
TEIN FLEX Z VST04-C1SA4 has twin-tube dampers, 16-level combined compression and rebound adjustment, and 4 kgf/mm front / 8 kgf/mm rear springs. The listed arrangement has camber-adjustable front pillowball mounts and rear rubber mounts. Consider the possible mount noise as well as the adjustment. TEIN's UK recommended height change is 25–45 mm lower at both ends; let the installer choose a usable point within the correct instructions.
- Twin-tube damping
- Front pillowball / rear rubber mounts
- Plan height around road clearance
Check the BR or RM configuration, then make measured changes around your tyres.
Read the buying advice
BC Racing BCR-C-12 offers BR RA and RM MH configurations in the current listing. BR RA has front pillowball and rear rubber mounts; RM MH uses inverted dampers with pillowball mounts. The listed standard spring rates are 4 kg/mm front / 5 kg/mm rear. Confirm the chosen configuration and supplied parts, record the alignment and damper settings, and change one setting at a time between sessions.
- Choose the actual BR or RM option
- Check mounts and adjustment access
- Record changes between sessions
Discuss the whole car before deciding whether the MONO SPORT specification suits it.
Read the buying advice
TEIN MONO SPORT GST04-71SS4 uses monotube dampers, 16-level combined damping adjustment and 5 kgf/mm front / 10 kgf/mm rear springs. It is a specification to discuss for a UK SW20 with a planned track setup; higher spring figures alone do not prove a better lap time or handling balance. Include tyre type, weight changes and alignment in the discussion, and check the early Type I clearance note.
- Monotube damper construction
- 5 kgf/mm front / 10 kgf/mm rear
- Check early-car body clearance
The rear spring sits around the damper.
The rear spring surrounds the damper on a standard Toyota MR2 SW20.
Component layout only. Mounts, dimensions and adjusters vary by kit.Toyota's UK launch material describes MacPherson struts at the front and dual-link MacPherson struts at the rear. The rear spring surrounds the damper; the SW20 does not use the separate rear spring seat shown in our E46 guide.
On a kit with a separate body-length adjuster, that adjuster and the spring platform have different jobs. Establish preload and height using the exact kit instructions. The maximum mechanical adjustment range is not a recommendation to run at either extreme.
TEIN's UK FLEX Z and MONO SPORT rows recommend a 25–45 mm reduction at both ends, with a 35 mm reference setting. Import rows differ. Keep the applicable market row with the part number and check travel and clearance at the chosen height.
Understand height and preload
Check the old suspension, then measure the finished setup.
Include the joints, bushes, strut mounting areas and alignment adjusters in the inspection. The MR2's age and previous modifications can matter more to the job than a tidy exterior. Deal with worn or seized parts before evaluating the replacement dampers.
Take the front and rear wheel widths, offsets and tyre sizes to the installer. Check tyre-to-arch and wheel-to-suspension clearance through movement and at steering lock. Once the final height is set, measure the alignment and keep the printout with the starting damper settings.
Front and rear tyres
Toyota used different front and rear tyre sizes at the Japanese launch. Treat a replacement wheel and tyre package as a complete setup: widths, offsets, diameters and available clearance all belong in the discussion. A wider rear tyre does not establish the correct damper setting.
Early and later components
The range had suspension revisions during production. Identify the car by chassis and build date, then inspect its existing parts. For MONO SPORT on early Type I cars, resolve the specific lower-damper/body clearance condition before fitting.
Engine conversions and weight
Tell the fitter about an engine conversion, stripped interior or added track equipment. Those changes need consideration when discussing springs and damping. Do not assume the standard rates were selected for your modified car's weight.
Height and adjustment access
Plan access to the adjusters with the kit and the car in front of the installer. EDFC is an optional system for compatible TEIN applications, with controllers and other required parts sold separately. Confirm the exact compatible components before adding it.

Questions about Toyota MR2 SW20 coilovers.
Check the details before choosing your kit.
Which coilovers are listed for the second-generation MR2?
The current SW20 range has BC Racing BCR-C-12, TEIN FLEX Z VST04-C1SA4 and TEIN MONO SPORT GST04-71SS4. BC Racing has BR RA and RM MH configurations. Check the live product options and the exact market, engine and build-date requirements before ordering.
Does the SW20 have separate rear springs and dampers?
The standard SW20 has a coil spring around each rear damper. Toyota describes the rear suspension as a dual-link MacPherson strut arrangement. Use the replacement kit's own instructions for mounting, preload and height.
What is the early-car TEIN MONO SPORT clearance note?
TEIN warns that Type I cars built from October 1989 to November 1991 can have narrow clearance between the bottom of the damper and the body, with possible interference due to individual vehicle variation. Resolve that condition for the exact car before ordering or fitting GST04-71SS4.
Can I use the UK application for a Japanese or US import?
Check the import separately. TEIN publishes distinct market rows, including SW20L 2.0-litre and SW21L 2.2-litre US cars, with different height guidance. Our MONO SPORT listing is explicitly UK-market. BC Racing identifies SW20/21, but the actual car and selected configuration still need matching.
How far should I lower an SW20?
TEIN's UK FLEX Z and MONO SPORT rows recommend 25–45 mm lower at both ends, with a 35 mm reference setting. These figures belong to those exact UK applications. Choose the final height with the installer after checking travel, tyre and body clearance; a kit's maximum mechanical range is not a road-use target.
How do the listed spring rates compare?
BC Racing lists 4 kg/mm front / 5 kg/mm rear for BCR-C-12. TEIN FLEX Z lists 4/8 kgf/mm and MONO SPORT 5/10 kgf/mm. Spring figures alone do not establish stiffness at the tyre or handling balance; geometry, tyres, damping and the rest of the setup also matter.
Is electronic damping control included?
EDFC is optional on compatible TEIN applications. A controller and the required compatible parts are sold separately. Confirm the exact kit, motors, access and installation requirements before ordering an electronic-control package.
Will these kits fit an AW11 or MR2 Roadster?
This guide covers the second-generation SW20/SW21 family. The first-generation AW11 and third-generation ZZW30 Roadster or Spyder have separate applications. An MR2 name or registration lookup alone does not establish compatibility.
