Which MR2 Roadster ZZW30 do you have?3 listed kits · 2 brandsReviewed 3 November 2026

The MR2 became a small, light roadster.

For a Roadster that spends most of its time on the road, we'd keep enough travel to deal with bumps. Start with sound tyres and an inspection of the existing joints and mounts, then choose a usable height. A large drop can use up clearance and travel without giving you the road manners you wanted.

The current range has BC Racing C-18 configurations, TEIN FLEX Z and TEIN MONO SPORT. There are practical differences in the controls, spring rates and fitting notes. FLEX Z's front luggage-cover requirement deserves checking before installation, particularly if you want to keep that space usable.

Toyota launched the third-generation car as the MR-S in Japan in October 1999. It used a 1.8-litre 1ZZ-FE engine behind the cabin, rear-wheel drive and a folding soft top. The UK MR2 Roadster followed in 2000. Roadster, MR-S and Spyder names belong to this generation in different markets; the chassis and market still need checking for a kit.

For the 2003 model, Toyota revised the suspension and added rear suspension bracing, along with six-speed manual and SMT gearboxes. The updated UK car went on sale in October 2002. It also had 16-inch rear wheels with 15-inch fronts, so a registration date alone is a poor way to identify the wheel and suspension specification now on a car.

The earlier UK launch specification used 15-inch wheels at both ends, with different front and rear tyre widths. Keep that front/rear distinction when planning modifications. The final TF300 edition marked the closing UK sales period in 2006; broader supplier application years should not be used as a history of UK showroom sales.

Early UK Roadster

The current ZZW30 listings are the starting range for an early 1.8-litre UK car. Toyota's launch specification used 185/55 R15 front and 205/50 R15 rear tyres. Confirm the actual wheels, build date, transmission and existing suspension, then read the exact kit's notes.

2003 model and later UK cars

The facelift arrived in UK showrooms in October 2002, with suspension changes and 16-inch rear wheels. Check the build specification and any later wheel changes. The current kit range spans these years, but its tyre clearance, mounts and height still need matching to the actual car.

US-market MR2 Spyder

TEIN's US rows use ZZW30L and give different height guidance from the UK rows. The name Spyder in a listing is not enough to settle a specific US car's application. Ask us to confirm the chassis, year and selected kit before ordering.

TEIN MONO SPORT GSY24-71SS4 uses monotube dampers with 16-level combined adjustment and 4 kgf/mm front / 6 kgf/mm rear springs. Our listing is for the UK-market ZZW30. Its recommended lowering is 25–45 mm front and 20–40 mm rear. Check the car's tyres, weight changes and alignment plan before choosing it; a higher spring figure alone does not establish a better track setup.

The rear spring surrounds the damper on a standard Toyota MR2 Roadster ZZW30.

Component layout only. Mounts, dimensions and adjusters vary by kit.

Toyota's launch material describes front MacPherson struts and a dual-link MacPherson arrangement at the rear. Each rear spring surrounds its damper.

Set preload and ride height using the exact replacement kit's instructions. The spring seat and any separate body-length adjuster have different functions. A maximum mechanical adjustment range should not be treated as a target height.

The TEIN UK reference settings differ by kit: FLEX Z is 30 mm lower at the front and 25 mm at the rear; MONO SPORT is 35 mm front and 30 mm rear. Keep those figures with their part numbers and market rows. Choose the final setting after checking travel and clearance on the car.

Check access as well as wheel clearance.

Before fitting FLEX Z, discuss the front luggage-box cover with the installer. TEIN's UK application requires trimming or removal where that cover is fitted. Plan how the adjusters will be reached and confirm any optional EDFC parts separately; a compatible kit does not include the controller and accessories automatically.

Inspect bushes, joints, mounting areas and alignment adjusters while the existing suspension is accessible. Give the installer both front and rear wheel widths, offsets and tyre sizes. Check clearance through steering and suspension movement at the chosen height, then measure the alignment and keep the printout.

Different front and rear tyres

The original Roadster has different front and rear tyre sizes. Early UK cars used 15-inch wheels at both ends; the 2003-model update changed the rear wheels to 16 inches. Record what is on your car now and check the complete combination if changing diameters or offsets.

Luggage cover and adjuster access

FLEX Z's cover note is part of its fitting plan. Agree the required work before installation and check access with the final parts in place. Optional electronic adjustment needs its own compatible motors, controller and installation plan.

Engine swaps and added equipment

Tell the fitter about an engine conversion, hardtop, cage or other weight changes before discussing springs. The standard rates listed for an application do not describe a bespoke specification for every modified Roadster.

Reservoirs and track preparation

If choosing an external-reservoir configuration, confirm suitable mounting and line clearance with the installer. Check the event requirements for an open car and plan the braking and cooling work alongside the suspension. Record one setup change at a time.

TEIN

FLEX Z VSY24-C1SA4 is twin-tube with 3/5 kgf/mm springs; MONO SPORT GSY24-71SS4 is monotube with 4/6 kgf/mm springs. Both have 16-level combined damping adjustment. Keep the UK recommended height ranges and FLEX Z's luggage-cover note attached to the exact kit; imports need the relevant market check.

Questions about Toyota MR2 Roadster ZZW30 coilovers.

Check the details before choosing your kit.

Which coilovers are listed for the MR2 Roadster ZZW30?

The current range has BC Racing BCR-C-18, TEIN FLEX Z VSY24-C1SA4 and TEIN MONO SPORT GSY24-71SS4. BC Racing offers BR RA, RM MH, ER and ZX configurations in the listing. Confirm the exact car, market and selected option before ordering.

Does TEIN FLEX Z require work to the front luggage-box cover?

Yes. TEIN's UK ZZW30 application for VSY24-C1SA4 says the front luggage-box cover, where fitted, needs to be trimmed or removed. Discuss that work and adjuster access with the installer before fitting.

What are the TEIN recommended lowering ranges?

For the UK ZZW30, FLEX Z recommends 20–40 mm lower at the front and 15–35 mm rear. MONO SPORT recommends 25–45 mm front and 20–40 mm rear. These ranges belong to the named UK applications; maximum mechanical travel and import-market settings are different.

Does the Roadster have separate rear springs and dampers?

The factory ZZW30 has a coil spring around each rear damper. Toyota describes the rear suspension as a dual-link MacPherson strut arrangement. Use the exact replacement kit's instructions for mounts, preload and ride height.

Did early and facelift Roadsters use the same wheels?

The original UK launch specification used 15-inch wheels with 185/55 R15 front and 205/50 R15 rear tyres. For the 2003 model, introduced in the UK in October 2002, Toyota changed to 16-inch rear wheels while retaining 15-inch fronts. Check the car's actual wheels and tyre sizes before planning clearance.

Can a Japanese MR-S or US Spyder use the UK application?

Check the import separately. TEIN publishes distinct Japanese, UK and US rows; the US Spyder rows use ZZW30L and have different height guidance. Our MONO SPORT listing is explicitly UK-market, so the exact imported car needs confirmation before ordering.

What is BC Racing's ZX configuration?

BC Racing describes ZX as a three-way adjustable track series, with separate low-speed compression, high-speed compression and rebound controls. It is one of the options in the current C-18 listing. Confirm the vehicle-specific hardware and intended setup before choosing it.

Is EDFC included with the TEIN kits?

EDFC is optional on compatible TEIN applications. The controller and required accessories are sold separately. Confirm the exact compatible components and installation access for the car and kit before ordering.

Do the spring rates tell me which kit will handle best?

The parent BC Racing listing states 3.5 kg/mm front / 5 kg/mm rear; FLEX Z lists 3/5 kgf/mm and MONO SPORT 4/6 kgf/mm. Those figures alone do not establish stiffness at the tyres or predict the best handling. Geometry, damping, tyres, weight and alignment also need consideration.
