Your first setup after fitting coilovers

Start from the supplied instructions and make changes you can trace.

Finish the installation before tuning

Before discussing damper clicks, have the installer complete the checks required by the kit and vehicle instructions. That includes the fitted height, clearances and alignment. Collect the instructions and ask which settings were used. A test drive cannot compensate for a fitting issue.

Write down the starting point

Record the exact kit and spring specification, tyre sizes and pressures, ride-height measurement method and alignment readings. For adjustable dampers, use the reference direction and counting method in that kit’s instructions. Do not copy a number from a different brand or turn an adjuster past its stated stop.

A note on your phone is enough if it identifies the date, axle and setting clearly. “Six clicks” on its own does not say which control or which end of the range you counted from.

Describe the behaviour before changing it

Use ordinary observations: which surface, which speed range and whether the movement occurs over a bump or after it. Keep tyre conditions and route consistent when comparing a change. If several controls move together, it becomes harder to tell which change produced the result.

Follow the maker’s starting settings and adjustment guidance. Where the kit has separate controls, record compression and rebound separately. The front and rear do not automatically need the same value.

Bring an unexplained problem back for checking

A new noise, contact mark, fluid leak or sudden change needs inspection. Leave diagnosis to the fitter or service specialist before trying to conceal it with a firmer setting. Send us the kit code and a description if you need the correct instructions or a parts check. We can help trace the application without inventing a universal setup for every car.
