Acura CL YA4.
The coilover guide.
Shop the coiloversThe second-generation CL puts a 3.2-litre V6 and independent suspension under a long two-door body. Choose a height that works with your wheels, then check the US-market YA4 application and what has already been changed on the car.
A V6 coupe with two different starting points.
TEIN FLEX Z VSH94-CUSA3 is the current listed kit. TEIN's UK application identifies the CL YA4, 3.2-litre front-wheel-drive US-market car, with a 2000–2003 application range. Acura sold this generation as a 2001–2003 model; a registration year alone can be misleading on an import.
The ordinary 3.2 CL and Type S started with different suspension tuning. Include the trim, transmission and existing parts in the check rather than treating every CL badge as the same starting point.
Acura unveiled the new 3.2 CL in January 2000 and put it on sale in the US that March for the 2001 model year. The ordinary car had 225hp; the Type S had 260hp and its own sport suspension tuning. Both used a five-speed automatic at launch.
For the 2003 model, the Type S gained an optional six-speed manual. That gives a useful distinction when describing a car, but transmission choice does not replace the chassis and application check. A later registration or a Type S badge is too little information for ordering suspension.
A restrained drop and a well-chosen set of wheels suit the CL's long doors and rounded roofline. On an older import, inspect the parts already underneath it before chasing a particular arch gap: worn bushes, previous springs and altered wheel offsets all affect the result.

Second-generation 3.2 CL: start with YA4
The verified manufacturer row names CL, YA4, 3200cc, front-wheel drive and USA. Check those details against the actual car. TEIN's 2000–2003 range and Acura's 2001-model launch describe different date conventions.
See the YA4 FLEX Z application
Type S: record the original sport setup
Acura gave the Type S different factory spring and damper tuning. TEIN's UK application does not name a trim, so include the Type S identity and existing suspension details when asking us to check the kit.

Later Type S manual: include the build details
The six-speed manual was an option on the 2003-model Type S. Include the build date, transmission and any drivetrain or mounting changes. A manual conversion needs the actual work described rather than a model-year shortcut.

Imported or already modified: show what is fitted
Tell us about wheel sizes, spacers, changed arms, mounts and earlier suspension work. This guide covers the YA4 generation; a first-generation CL, Acura TL or Honda Accord needs its own application even where a supplier lists a shared part number.

FLEX Z VSH94-CUSA3 is the listed road example, subject to the exact YA4 check. It combines adjustable height with 16-level linked compression and rebound adjustment. Start with the supplied instructions and enough clearance for the roads, passengers and wheels you actually use.
- US-market YA4 application
- Rubber upper mounts front and rear
- Agree height around real clearance
Bring the tyres and intended use into the decision.

Tell us which tyres you run and how often the car goes on circuit. Have the fitter check suspension condition, available travel and wheel clearance before agreeing settings. Keep any damping changes with the setup notes so you can compare them at the next outing.
- Describe the tyre and track-day use
- Check condition and working travel
- Keep road clearance in the brief
Specify the complete car before choosing the package.

Give the builder the event requirements, tyre specification, intended running height and any arm or mount changes. Agree the spring, damper and alignment requirements around that car. The current road listing does not establish a dedicated competition package or an event approval.
- Set out event and tyre requirements
- Agree the spring and damper specification
- Plan travel checks and alignment
The rear spring surrounds the damper.
The rear spring surrounds the damper on a standard Acura CL YA4.
Component layout only. Mounts, dimensions and adjusters vary by kit.The second-generation CL has independent rear suspension, described by Acura as a multi-link double-wishbone arrangement. The main rear spring surrounds the damper, as shown in Acura's original brochure.
Order the kit and mounts specified for the actual car. Follow the supplied instructions for height and preload, and have the fitter check the mounting parts and available travel before setting the final height.
Understand height and spring preload
Check the wheels before closing the arch gap.
Record wheel width, offset, tyre size and any spacers. Ask the fitter to check inner clearance, steering movement and arch clearance through suspension travel, including the loads you normally carry. A wheel that clears while the car is parked may still rub in use.
Have the bushes, joints, mounts and existing suspension assessed before the final height and alignment are agreed. The CL's age and previous work matter here. A new damper cannot correct a worn joint or an unsuitable wheel offset.
Original trim and previous suspension
Identify ordinary CL or Type S and record what springs, dampers and mounts remain. Factory tuning and earlier lowering change the starting point for a height discussion.
Wheels, spacers and tyres
Keep the full wheel and tyre dimensions with the enquiry. Include spacers and brake changes, then have clearance checked at the proposed running height and through movement.
Bushes, joints and mounting parts
Ask the fitter to inspect the suspension before setting alignment. Establish which mounting parts the supplied kit includes and what condition any retained parts are in.
Damping and electronic control
The listed FLEX Z uses linked compression and rebound adjustment. EDFC is a separate option; confirm the required hardware and physical installation clearance before planning it into the car.

See the controls and hardware in the listed kit.
FLEX Z VSH94-CUSA3 is the current listed reference. TEIN's UK CL YA4 specification gives nominal 12kgf/mm front and 4kgf/mm rear springs, with rubber upper mounts at both ends. Confirm the supplied specification and usable clearance before agreeing the height.

Questions about Acura CL YA4 coilovers.
Check the details before choosing your kit.
Which coilover kit is listed for the Acura CL YA4?
TEIN FLEX Z VSH94-CUSA3 is currently listed. TEIN's UK application identifies the US-market CL YA4, 3200cc and front-wheel drive, with a 2000–2003 application range. Confirm the car's exact build, trim and existing modifications before ordering.
Why does TEIN say 2000–2003 when the car is a 2001 model?
Acura launched this generation in the US in March 2000 for the 2001 model year. TEIN's application range starts in 2000. Keep the chassis identity and build details with the enquiry rather than using the registration year alone.
What needs checking on a CL Type S or six-speed manual?
The Type S had different factory suspension tuning, and an optional six-speed manual arrived for the 2003 model. TEIN's UK application does not name a trim. Send the actual trim, transmission and any conversion details so we can check the kit for your car.
Are the CL's rear spring and damper separate?
The rear spring surrounds the damper on this generation. Acura's original brochure shows a coil-over shock absorber in its independent multi-link double-wishbone rear suspension. It is not the separate spring-seat arrangement used on some other cars.
How much lowering does TEIN recommend for the CL YA4?
TEIN's UK specification gives a recommended range of 40 to 60mm lower at the front and 30 to 50mm lower at the rear relative to its original baseline. If the car is already lowered, establish its present height first. Use the supplied kit instructions and actual clearance to agree the finished height.
Does FLEX Z adjust compression and rebound separately?
The listed kit has 16-level linked compression and rebound adjustment. It is not an independently adjustable two-way damper. Follow the supplied instructions and record changes rather than copying settings from a different car.
Is EDFC included with the CL kit?
EDFC is a separate option. Manufacturer compatibility information does not settle the physical space available on a particular modified car. Confirm the required control hardware, motor clearance and installation requirements before adding it.
Does the registration finder confirm an imported CL's modified setup?
The finder helps identify the vehicle. It does not identify every changed spring, mount, arm, wheel or spacer. Include those details and the actual chassis/build information so the kit can be checked against the car.
Let’s talk suspension.
Find your CL, then tell us the YA4 build details, trim, transmission and suspension already fitted. Include the wheel and tyre sizes, spacers and intended use so the application and finished height can be checked together.
