From Giugiaro’s concept to a road-going coupe.

The Brera’s short roof and wide rear arches give you plenty to work with when choosing wheels and ride height. Before setting a target, measure the car on its current tyres and think about the roads it has to cover. A tidy parked stance still needs room for steering, passengers and suspension movement.

A 2.2 JTS, a 3.2 with Q4 and a Prodrive-developed Brera S need different questions answered. Some have already had springs or dampers replaced. Identify the fitted parts alongside the original specification, especially if you want to change a factory sports setup.

Alfa Romeo introduced the production Brera in 2005, drawing on Giorgetto Giugiaro’s earlier concept. The road car has a three-door hatchback body and 2+2 seating. Its six front lamps and tapering rear glass give it a different shape from the 159 saloon, even where an aftermarket part number appears against both models.

The chassis uses high double wishbones at the front and an independent multilink rear. Alfa offered the 3.2 JTS with Q4 four-wheel drive, while the later UK Brera S had front-wheel drive in both 2.2 JTS and 3.2 V6 form. The engine badge alone cannot tell you which drivetrain you are ordering for.

For the 2008 Brera S, Prodrive developed bespoke Eibach springs and Bilstein dampers, revised the geometry and fitted lightweight 19-inch wheels. If yours retains that setup, decide what you want to change before replacing it. The fact that Eibach made its original springs does not establish that every Pro-Street S kit is an approved replacement for it.

2.2 JTS

Eibach PSS65-10-005-01-22 is the listed 2.2 JTS Brera example. Its application gives a 25 to 55 mm lowering range at both axles. Have the certificate checked against the car’s permitted axle loads and existing equipment, including any required OE fitting parts.

3.2 JTS and driven wheels

The 3.2 JTS Brera example is PSS65-10-005-02-22. Give us the build details and confirm FWD or Q4 so the exact certificate can be matched. A general 3.2 JTS label does not settle the application for a front-wheel-drive S or an altered car.

Brera S

The UK S has its own Prodrive-developed suspension specification. Both its 2.2 JTS and 3.2 V6 versions are front-wheel drive. Send the fitted spring and damper details with the changes you want; the S badge needs to stay in the enquiry when a replacement package is selected.

Other engines and changed cars

For a TBi, diesel, import or converted car, provide the full engine and build details. The 02 kit is listed for the 2.4 JTDM 20V; match its certificate to your axle loads and original equipment. Other engines need their own application checked before a kit is selected.

The Eibach Pro-Street S 01 kit is the named 2.2 JTS example. Choose a setting within the exact application’s permitted range after checking the existing mounts and wheel clearance. Keep your usual rough roads and access ramps in the conversation with the fitter, particularly if the car already sits lower than standard.

Tell the workshop which circuit days you plan to attend, the tyres you intend to use and any brake changes. Ask how the proposed spring and damper specification suits that mix of use. The 01 and 02 Eibach numbers distinguish applications; moving between them is not a track-performance upgrade.

A stripped cabin, cage or different suspension arms changes the brief. Give the builder the finished weight and intended tyres, together with the rules for the events you will enter. Agree the spring, damper and mounting package for those conditions before treating a road-car application as the answer.

Component layout only. Mounts, dimensions and adjusters vary by kit.

The Brera’s original rear coil spring surrounds its damper. The combined unit sits within an independent multilink suspension, with separate links controlling the wheel’s position. It is not the separate rear spring-and-damper arrangement shown for some other cars.

Check the links, bushes and mounting parts while the suspension is being assessed. The exact replacement kit determines its adjustment method and fitting hardware. Tell the fitter about the driven wheels and original suspension equipment; a diagram of the spring position cannot confirm a particular part number.

Understand height and spring preload

Bring the wheel details to the fitting discussion.

Wheel width, offset and tyre size affect the room available as the front wheels turn and the suspension moves. Record any spacers and brake changes too. Ask the workshop to inspect clearance through movement, rather than choosing the height solely from the parked gap above the tyre.

Measure the existing height before taking the suspension apart, especially on a Brera S or a car with earlier lowering work. Agree the intended running height and arrange alignment after fitting. Keep the final measurements so a future tyre or wheel change can be checked against the setup you actually have.

Wheels, tyres and spacers

Keep the wheel width and offset with the actual tyre size. Spacers change the wheel’s position under the arch, so include them when the fitter checks clearance through steering and suspension movement.

Wishbones and rear links

Have existing play, worn bushes and damaged mounting parts assessed before fitting a new kit. The front wishbones and rear links continue to locate the wheels after the dampers are replaced.

The existing S specification

Record whether the original Prodrive-developed spring and damper package remains fitted. Its factory lowering changes the starting point for any proposed height adjustment.

Brake and project changes

Larger brakes need wheel-to-calliper clearance, while changes to the cabin or suspension hardware belong in the specification discussion. Give the workshop a complete account of the car’s current build.

Eibach

Eibach lists the 01 Pro-Street S kit for the 2.2 JTS, and 02 for the 3.2 JTS and 2.4 JTDM 20V applications. Both have a 25 to 55 mm range at each axle. Check the certificate against the car’s permitted axle loads and original suspension, including any additional OE parts needed for fitting. The applications exclude levelling control.

Questions about Alfa Romeo Brera coilovers.

Check the details before choosing your kit.

Which Eibach kit is listed for the Brera 2.2 JTS?

The named example is PSS65-10-005-01-22. Its Brera application lists 25 to 55 mm at each axle. Match the exact certificate, permitted axle loads and original suspension equipment before ordering, including any additional OE parts required.

Is every 3.2 Brera a Q4?

No. Alfa’s UK Brera S specification lists the 3.2 V6 with front-wheel drive, while the ordinary range also included the 3.2 JTS Q4. Supply the build and drivetrain details when checking PSS65-10-005-02-22; the engine size alone does not settle fitment.

Are the Brera’s rear springs separate from its dampers?

The original rear spring surrounds its damper in a combined unit. The wheels are located by an independent multilink suspension. Replacement mounting parts and adjustment details depend on the exact kit and original equipment.

Should I replace the original suspension on a Brera S?

Start with its condition and what you want to change. The S has a Prodrive-developed package with bespoke Eibach springs, Bilstein dampers and revised geometry. Have the existing parts inspected and discuss a replacement as a complete specification, including its effect on the present height.

Will the quoted lowering range be an extra drop from my current height?

Measure the car first. Factory sports suspension or earlier lowering work changes the starting point. The usable final setting also depends on the kit’s permitted range, tyre clearance and available suspension movement.

What about a diesel or TBi Brera?

Send the full engine and build details for an application check. The current 02 listing includes 2.4 JTDM 20V, but other engines cannot be assigned a kit merely from the Brera name. The certificate, permitted axle loads and existing equipment must agree.

Can a 159 or Spider kit be used because the model code is 939?

Use the exact part number and its stated application. Some Eibach numbers name several Alfa models, but the shared 939 code does not make every kit interchangeable. Brera, Spider and 159 body details need to remain separate when matching the car.

Does the registration finder confirm my modifications?

The finder helps identify the vehicle. Tell us separately about S suspension, FWD or Q4, wheels, spacers, brakes and earlier suspension work. Those details still need checking against the exact kit and its certificate.
