Alfa Romeo GTV 916.
The coilover guide.
Shop the coiloversKeep the GTV’s low wedge shape, then choose the suspension around its engine, wheels and the roads it uses. The four-cylinder and V6 kits have separate references.
Pininfarina’s wedge, from Twin Spark to V6.
A tidy wheel upgrade suits the GTV’s rising shoulder line. Before bringing the body closer to the tyres, have the existing arms, spring carriers and mounting points inspected. Those parts still have to locate the wheels accurately after the new dampers go on.
Our current range separates the four-cylinder ZR-09 application from V6 ZR-05. Identify the engine and chassis details first, then choose the exact configuration. A GTV badge, a facelift nose or the supplier’s year range cannot choose between those packages.
Alfa presented the 916 GTV alongside the Spider at Geneva in 1995, with UK sales following in May 1996. Pininfarina and Alfa Romeo Centro Stile developed its low coupe roof, short high tail and strong crease along the doors.
Four-cylinder Twin Spark cars and the V6 models were joined by the 2.0 JTS and 3.2 V6 in the 2003 restyle. That update brought the larger front shield, while the familiar wedge profile stayed. The GTV remained front-wheel drive, with MacPherson front suspension and a multilink rear.
The suspension discussion on an older GTV starts with what is fitted now. Record replacement arms, springs and spacers rather than assuming they are original. For a car used at weekends, agree a height that still clears the approach to your garage and the roads on the way out.

Four-cylinder GTV: Twin Spark and JTS checks
The current four-cylinder listing is ZR-09, labelled I4 only and GH-91620G. Give us the engine, build and original suspension details so the exact application can be checked. Keep that reference separate from the V6 package when choosing your configuration.

V6 GTV: choose the exact configuration
ZR-05 is the separate V6-only listing, labelled GF-916C1. It currently offers BR RS and RM MA configurations. Confirm your actual engine and build, then compare the damper construction and supplied mounts for the use you have in mind.

Facelift, brake and suspension changes
The 2003 restyle added different engines and mechanical revisions. Tell us if a previous owner has changed the nose, brakes, arms or suspension. Confirm the underlying car and the parts fitted; an exterior update does not change its kit application.

List the wheel sizes, spacers, suspension parts and proposed use before ordering. Have the rear spring carriers, arms and mounting points assessed as part of the job. A shared 916 designation alone also does not confirm a kit for a Spider convertible.

The named example is ZR-09 BR RS for a matching four-cylinder GTV. Confirm the engine and supplied parts, then choose the running height around your wheels and usual journeys. Leave room for the tyres to move rather than setting the arch gap alone.

ZR-05 BR RS is the named V6 example. Describe the road mileage, tyres and any planned circuit sessions when discussing its specification. Have the rear arms and mounting condition checked before agreeing the height and alignment with the fitter.

- Include road mileage and circuit use
- Inspect rear arms and mounts
Discuss the inverted-front RM construction.
Read the buying advice
The V6 listing also offers RM MA, with an inverted front damper arrangement. Discuss that construction with the builder alongside the tyres, event rules and proposed weight changes. It is not a four-cylinder alternative; confirm the complete package and adjustment needs before choosing it.

A separate rear spring, carried beside the damper.
On a standard Alfa Romeo GTV 916, the rear spring and damper are mounted separately.
Component layout only. Mounts, dimensions and adjusters vary by kit.The GTV’s original multilink rear suspension carries the coil spring on its own arm, separate from the damper. The links and their mounts locate the wheel around that spring and damper layout.
Have the spring carriers, seats, links and mounting points inspected during the fitting work. Confirm how the replacement kit sets rear height and which parts it retains. Use its own instructions for the adjusters; do not assume the front lower-bracket method applies at the rear.
Understand height and spring preload
Give the rear arms as much attention as the arch gap.
Bring the actual wheel width, offset, tyre size and spacer measurements to the fitter. Check the inner suspension clearance and the arch edge through steering and suspension movement. Include larger brakes when confirming that the chosen wheels clear the hardware.
Ask the workshop to assess the rear spring carriers, suspension arms, bushes and damper mounts before fitting. Record the existing hub-to-arch measurements, follow the new kit’s settling instructions and arrange alignment once the running height is established.
Wheels, tyres and spacers
Measure what is fitted, including wheel width and offset. Check inner clearance as well as the outer arch before committing to the finished height.
Rear spring carriers and links
Have the spring seats, carrier arms, bushes and mounting points assessed with the suspension apart. New dampers do not correct movement in a worn joint.
Engine and brake changes
Identify the actual engine and build details, then list later brake or suspension work. Keep the four-cylinder and V6 references separate throughout the order.
Height, settling and alignment
Agree a usable height with the fitter, follow the kit’s settling procedure and have alignment checked at that height. Keep the measurements for later wheel or suspension changes.
The current GTV 916 range.
Compare the controls and hardware included in each range.
The current four-cylinder listing is ZR-09 in BR RS specification. V6 ZR-05 offers BR RS and RM MA, the latter naming an inverted front damper arrangement. Compare those constructions within the correct engine application. Confirm the supplied mounts, springs and retained rear parts rather than assuming every catalogue series is available for your car.

Questions about Alfa Romeo GTV 916 coilovers.
Check the details before choosing your kit.
Which coilover kits are currently listed for the GTV 916?
The current range separates four-cylinder ZR-09 from V6-only ZR-05. The former has a BR RS listing; the V6 product offers BR RS and RM MA configurations. Confirm your engine, chassis and build against the exact application before ordering.
Can I use the V6 kit on my Twin Spark or JTS?
Keep the engine applications separate. ZR-05 is listed for V6 cars and ZR-09 for four-cylinder cars. Confirm the actual engine and supplied package against the exact kit reference before ordering.
Is RM MA simply a different top mount option?
The current V6 RM MA configuration names an inverted front damper arrangement. Compare its construction and supplied mounting package with BR RS for your intended use; do not assume the complete damper specification is identical.
Does the GTV 916 have a separate rear spring and damper?
Yes. Its original multilink rear suspension carries the spring separately from the damper, on a spring carrier arm. Check the replacement kit’s own rear height arrangement, seats and retained parts with the fitter.
Does the 96-06 kit label describe every GTV production date?
96-06 is the supplier’s application label. The GTV appeared at Geneva in 1995 and reached the UK in May 1996. Use your actual build and chassis details to confirm the kit, especially for an early car or a car from another market.
Does a GTV 916 listing also confirm fitment for a Spider?
Ask us to check a Spider against its exact chassis and engine. The current product listings name the GTV applications; shared 916 family details and related suspension architecture alone do not confirm the convertible’s kit.
How low can I run a GTV on upgraded wheels?
Have the wheel widths, offsets, tyres and spacers measured on the actual car. Check clearance at the suspension and arches through steering and suspension movement, then agree a usable running height with the fitter.
Will the registration finder identify my suspension changes?
The finder helps identify the car. Tell us separately about fitted springs, dampers, arms, spacers and brake changes so the exact kit and fitting work can be checked.
Let’s talk suspension.
Find your GTV, then tell us its engine and the suspension fitted now. Add the wheel and tyre measurements and how you use the car so we can check the kit and plan the fitting work.
