Alpina D3 E90 / E91 / E92.
The coilover guide.
Shop the coiloversA D3 already has Alpina’s own spring and damper setup. Identify the early single-turbo or later BiTurbo car before choosing a replacement, then work out the height you can use with your wheels and everyday loads.
The diesel Alpina, before and after BiTurbo.
The listed Bilstein B14 reference is 47-269064. Its Alpina application rows give 15 to 35mm front and rear; the larger BMW lowering figures attached to the same product belong to different applications.
Keep the body, engine version and axle plate with the enquiry. The kit paperwork has changed over time, so the supplied document revision also needs to agree with the car, especially on an early D3.
Alpina’s D3 story began in 2006 with a 200hp diesel. The BiTurbo followed at the 2008 Geneva show, using a two-litre four-cylinder diesel with two turbochargers and 211bhp. Its April 2009 brochure brought together the saloon, Touring and coupé.
That brochure describes Alpina’s own suspension calibration and a five-arm rear axle. Fine-spoke wheels and restrained body additions suit a modest drop, but establish what springs and dampers remain on the car before deciding how much further to lower it.
E90, E91 and E92 identify the saloon, Touring and coupé here. The later F30-generation D3 and petrol B3 need their own applications. An Alpina badge or a shared BMW platform does not settle the kit choice.
Start with your D3 E90 / E91 / E92.
Confirm the chassis, year and existing suspension before choosing your setup.

E90 saloon: identify the diesel version
The current application includes the D3 2.0 and 2.0 BiTurbo saloon, with a listed range of December 2005 to May 2013. Confirm the actual build and engine version; early-car paperwork needs a specific check.
Check the saloon B14 application
E91 Touring: allow for the working load
The listed D3 and BiTurbo estate rows also run from December 2005 to May 2013. Keep the Touring identity and axle plate in the check, and include the passengers and luggage you normally carry when agreeing ride height.
Check the Touring application
E92 coupé: the BiTurbo application
The coupé row names the 2.0 BiTurbo from July 2008 to May 2013. Match that application to the car and the supplied kit documents, then check the wheel and tyre clearance at the proposed running height.

Early D3 or a car with previous changes
Tell us if yours is the original single-turbo D3. Later manufacturer paperwork explicitly names D3 BiTurbo, which does not settle the early car’s documentation. Include any changed suspension, hubs or mounting parts in the enquiry.

Read the buying advice
Bilstein B14 47-269064 is the listed example, subject to the exact D3 application and paperwork. It has fixed damping and adjustable height. Establish the car’s present Alpina setup, then agree a useful height around tyre clearance, travel and normal loads.
- Check early D3 versus BiTurbo
- Fixed damping, adjustable height
- Use the Alpina lowering figures
Discuss tyres and session length first.
Read the buying advice
Bring the tyre specification, braking changes and intended circuit use to the conversation. B14 does not have a damping dial for switching between those uses. Ask whether its fixed setup suits the brief before buying it for a car that also needs to make the journey home comfortably.
- Record tyres and brake changes
- Discuss the fixed-damping setup
- Keep road clearance in the brief
Give the builder the complete car specification.
Read the buying advice
Agree the tyres, event requirements and intended running height with the builder. Have the springs, dampers and mounts selected around that work, with a plan for checking travel and setting alignment. The road listing alone does not establish a dedicated circuit package.
- Define the event and tyre requirements
- Agree the spring and damper package
- Plan travel checks and alignment
A rear spring seat beside the damper.
On a standard Alpina D3 E90 / E91 / E92, the rear spring and damper are mounted separately.
Component layout only. Mounts, dimensions and adjusters vary by kit.The rear main spring sits on its own seat, separate from the damper. The Bilstein instructions show the rear damper and spring-height assembly as separate components; the threaded spring seat provides the rear height adjustment.
Confirm which spring pads, seats and mounts the supplied package uses or retains. This layout is not a choice to make from the three body styles: order the hardware specified for the actual D3 application.
Understand height and spring preload
Leave room for the wheels to move.
Record wheel width and offset, tyre size and spacers. Check the tyre’s inner clearance and arch clearance through steering movement and with the loads you use. A Touring carrying luggage needs that load included before the height is signed off.
Have the fitter inspect the mounting parts, spring pads and bushes while the suspension is apart. Agree the running height within the supplied kit’s conditions, then arrange its fitting checks and alignment. Lowering an already modified car starts with measuring what is there.
Original Alpina suspension
Record the current spring and damper references and any earlier conversion. The original sports setup affects the useful height change from a catalogue figure.
Axle plate and document revision
The current listing gives maxima of 1035kg front and 1235kg rear. Match the actual axle plate and supplied paperwork; a later document’s different rear limit is not permission to extend this listing.
Wheels, spacers and tyres
Fine-spoke wheel upgrades still need their width, offset and tyre dimensions checked. Include brake changes and measure clearance at the intended height.
Rear seats and mounting parts
Confirm the separate rear spring-height hardware and the parts being retained. Ask the fitter to assess worn pads, mounts and bushes before setting alignment.

Bilstein
B14 47-269064 is the current listed reference for these D3 applications. The Alpina rows give 15 to 35mm at each end, with fixed damping and application limits. Check the early or BiTurbo car and the supplied document revision before agreeing the finished height.

Questions about Alpina D3 E90 / E91 / E92 coilovers.
Check the details before choosing your kit.
Which coilover kit is listed for the Alpina D3 E90, E91 and E92?
Bilstein B14 47-269064 is currently listed. The application includes D3 and BiTurbo saloons and Tourings, and the BiTurbo coupé. Match the build, engine version, axle plate and supplied kit paperwork before ordering.
Does a D3 BiTurbo certificate also cover my early single-turbo car?
The later manufacturer paperwork explicitly names D3 BiTurbo. That does not settle the original single-turbo D3, even though the current application list includes early cars. Ask us to check the documentation for your exact car before buying.
How much lowering is listed for the D3?
The Alpina application rows give 15 to 35mm front and rear. The same parent product includes BMW rows with different figures. Existing Alpina sports suspension, previous lowering and the supplied kit conditions need to be considered when setting a target height.
Are the D3 rear spring and damper separate?
Yes. The main rear spring has its own seat beside the damper. The Bilstein instructions show a separate rear damper and spring-height assembly. Confirm the supplied seats and retained mounting parts for the actual order.
Can I adjust the damping on the listed B14?
B14 has fixed damping and adjustable height. There is no damping dial to change for a track day. Discuss an adjustable-damping requirement before choosing the suspension package.
Which axle limits should I use?
The current listing states 1035kg front and 1235kg rear. Compare the vehicle plate with that application and the supplied documents. Different document revisions carry different conditions; have those resolved for the order rather than choosing the higher figure.
What needs checking on a D3 Touring?
Keep the E91 body and engine version in the application check. Include the passengers and luggage you normally carry when checking travel and wheel clearance, and confirm the separate rear spring seats and mounting parts.
Will the registration finder identify my modified suspension?
The finder helps identify the vehicle. Tell us separately about the springs and dampers now fitted, changed mounts, wheel sizes and spacers so those details can be included in the kit check.
Let’s talk suspension.
Find your D3, then tell us the body and engine version, what suspension is fitted and the axle-plate details. Include the wheels and spacers so we can check the package around the actual car.
