Audi A3 / S3 8L.
The coilover guide.
Shop the coiloversGive the first A3 a stance that works on your roads. Identify FWD, quattro or S3, then compare the rear height arrangement and the fitting conditions of the actual kit.
The small Audi before the Singleframe grille.
The 8L's short body and rounded arches suit period wheels and a modest drop. Start with the roads, passengers and loads it still has to carry. A good-looking parked car can still run out of clearance when a front wheel turns or the suspension compresses.
Front-wheel-drive A3s, quattro models and the S3 need different references. The rear spring sits separately from the damper on both axle layouts, but the hardware is not interchangeable. Some SPAX references also list a fixed rear drop instead of an adjustable rear range.
Audi introduced the A3 in 1996 as a three-door hatchback. Its thick rear pillars, compact tail and simple dashboard gave buyers a smaller alternative to the brand's saloons. The first generation is known as the 8L; the 8P followed in 2003.
The range grew to include a five-door body and the S3 in 1999. The S3 used a turbocharged 1.8-litre engine and quattro drive, with deeper bumpers and its own chassis specification. A later Sportback, Cabriolet or RS 3 belongs to a different generation.
For a road build, wheels and tyres can change the car as much as the final arch gap. Retain enough sidewall for rough surfaces and check width and offset before adding spacers. Establish what suspension is already fitted; an older A3 may have had several owners' changes.
A 1.8T with engine work or a stripped S3 needs the suspension choice discussed alongside the tyres and intended use. A shared platform or an 8L chassis label does not settle the kit reference, axle limits or original-equipment restrictions.

Match the model year, engine and body style before comparing brands.

Front-wheel-drive A3 8L
Identify the engine, gearbox and original suspension. Eibach -01 lists 1.6, 1.8, 1.8T and 1.9 TDI applications and excludes 4WD. The SPAX references carry factory-suspension and anti-roll-bar-link restrictions; check those before choosing a lowering range.

A3 quattro 8L
Use the quattro-specific reference and the exact engine and build details. Eibach -02 names 1.8T and 1.9 TDI quattro applications; SPAX has its own separate quattro rows. The different driven rear axle needs its own spring hardware and fitting instructions.

S3 8L quattro
The 1999-2003 S3 has specific BC Racing, Eibach and SPAX listings. Match the exact application and fitted suspension, especially where a listing excludes sports suspension. BC S-55 is the S3 AWD application; it does not establish fitment to an ordinary A3.

Changed running gear or uncertain specification
Send the engine and build details, original suspension equipment, existing kit reference and wheel specification. A drivetrain conversion, altered anti-roll bar or mixed-generation parts needs an application enquiry before a kit is chosen.

SPAX RSX739 is a road example for a checked FWD application. Its row lists 30-60mm at the front and a fixed 35mm rear drop. If you need rear height adjustment, compare RSX740 or the exact Eibach application. Check the factory-suspension exclusions and anti-roll-bar attachment before ordering.
- Match engine and fitted suspension
- Check the fixed rear drop
- Keep wheel and anti-roll-bar clearance
Choose separate controls when you have a setup plan.

RSX3-1480 is the double-adjustable FWD example, with separate bump and rebound controls and a listed 35-65mm range at each axle. Agree its suitability for your tyres and intended circuit use with the supplier and fitter. It retains the SPAX fitting restrictions; extra adjustment does not remove them.
- Confirm the exact FWD application
- Understand bump and rebound changes
- Plan tyres, brakes and setup support
Start with the actual drivetrain and finished specification.

Describe the car's weight changes, tyres and intended use before choosing spring and damper specifications. The S3 S-55 listing has BR RA, ER and ZX choices, but those series are not the same package with different mounts. Ask for the exact build and supplied hardware to be checked; a competition setup cannot be selected from price alone.
- Identify FWD, quattro or S3
- Describe tyres and weight changes
- Agree the exact series and hardware
Separate rear springs. Different rear axles.
On a standard Audi A3 / S3 8L, the rear spring and damper are mounted separately.
Component layout only. Mounts, dimensions and adjusters vary by kit.The front-wheel-drive A3 has a torsion-beam rear axle. Audi's four-wheel-drive workshop drawing shows a different rear assembly, also with the coil spring in its own seat beside a separate damper. Match FWD, quattro and S3 hardware; a separate spring does not make the kits interchangeable.
Check how the chosen kit sets rear height. RSX739 lists 35mm at the rear, while RSX740 lists 35-65mm; the corresponding quattro and S3 references also have fixed-drop and adjustable-range versions. Have the finished height and alignment checked against the exact car and instructions.
Understand height and spring adjustment
Check the link before lowering the front.
SPAX note 17 calls for a modified anti-roll-bar link above 50mm front lowering and excludes struts where the link attaches to the strut. Establish the car's actual attachment and the exact kit instructions before fitting. A quoted maximum lowering figure is not permission to ignore clearance.
Inspect retained mounts, bearings and bushes while planning the job. Record wheel width, offset, tyre size and spacers, then check clearance through steering and suspension travel. Settle the intended running height before the final alignment and follow the kit's post-installation checks.
Wheels and usable movement
Check clearance to the strut, inner arch and outer lip with the wheels steered and the suspension moving. Period-style alloys can suit the body without an extreme width or a tyre stretched to make the arch gap work.
Anti-roll bar and link
Identify where the link attaches and check the exact restrictions. The SPAX rows call for a modified link above 50mm front lowering and exclude a strut-mounted-link arrangement. Ask about the actual car before buying extra parts.
Original suspension and axle limits
SPAX excludes specified sports, bad-road and self-levelling arrangements. Eibach lists engine-specific axle limits and fitting notes. Record the original equipment and vehicle plate details instead of choosing from the model badge alone.
Retained parts and final alignment
Have reused mounts, bearings and bushes inspected, and confirm any additional OE parts required by the kit. Measure alignment at the final running height; lowering does not repair worn or damaged suspension.
The current A3 / S3 8L range.
Compare the controls and hardware included in each range.
The FWD, quattro and S3 rows use different references. Within each group, compare the actual rear arrangement: RSX739/746/748 list a fixed 35mm rear drop, while RSX740/747/749 and the respective double-adjustable references list a rear range. Preserve the factory-suspension and anti-roll-bar-link restrictions.
View SPAX A3 / S3 8L kitsPSS65-85-001-01-22 is the listed FWD application, with nominal 30-70mm lowering and maximum 1030kg front/1025kg rear axle loads. The -02 quattro and S3 rows list 25-50mm, with different rear axle limits. Check the exact engine row, component markings and certificate; clearance or additional OE parts may need attention.
View Eibach A3 / S3 8L kitsS-55 is listed for 1999-2003 S3 AWD, chassis 8L. BC describes BR as one-way adjustment, ER as two-way and ZX as three-way. Confirm the exact series, mounts and spring specification before ordering. These are S3 applications; a FWD A3 needs its own reference.

Confirm current timing before booking fitting. Retain the exact instructions, record the final settings, and arrange alignment and specified post-installation checks.
Questions about Audi A3 / S3 8L coilovers.
Check the details before choosing your kit.
How do I choose the correct A3 8L application?
Confirm the first-generation 8L, engine, gearbox and FWD, quattro or S3 specification. The 8P and later A3s use different applications. Check original suspension equipment, axle limits and the exact kit's fitting conditions.
Can I use a FWD kit on a quattro or S3?
Choose the separately listed reference for the actual drivetrain. The driven rear assembly is different, even though the spring and damper sit separately on both layouts. An 8L badge or shared platform does not establish interchangeability.
Do all the SPAX kits adjust rear height?
No. The listed RSX739, RSX746 and RSX748 rows specify a fixed 35mm rear drop. RSX740, RSX747 and RSX749 list rear ranges, as do the corresponding double-adjustable references. Check the exact application and supplied rear hardware.
What needs checking at the anti-roll-bar link?
SPAX note 17 calls for a modified anti-roll-bar link above 50mm front lowering and excludes struts where the link attaches to the strut. Have the actual attachment and kit instructions checked before fitting; a lowering range alone does not establish clearance.
What if my car already has sports suspension?
Check the exact application before ordering. The SPAX rows exclude specified sports, bad-road and self-levelling arrangements. Eibach has its own original-equipment and certificate conditions. Include the fitted suspension details in an enquiry, particularly for an S3 or an already modified car.
How do the Eibach -01 and -02 references differ?
The listed -01 application is for FWD A3 8L models and excludes 4WD. The -02 names particular quattro and S3 applications. Their lowering ranges, axle limits and component markings differ, so match the exact engine row and certificate.
Which cars does BC Racing S-55 cover?
The current manufacturer application list names 1999-2003 S3 AWD, chassis 8L. The shop has BR RA, ER and ZX configurations. Confirm the series and hardware for the actual S3; this reference does not establish fitment to an ordinary FWD A3.
What should I send for a modified 8L?
Send the engine and build details, drivetrain, original and current suspension, wheel width and offset, tyre size and spacers. Include any anti-roll-bar or drivetrain changes. The registration finder helps identify the car but cannot confirm those modifications.
Let’s talk suspension.
Find your 8L, then add the engine, drivetrain and suspension already fitted. Include the wheels and anti-roll-bar arrangement so we can check the exact kit with you.
