Audi A4 B6.
The coilover guide.
Shop the coiloversA tidy B6 needs little more than the right wheels and a considered ride height. Choose the body and drivetrain first, then match the exact axle-load limits and leave room for the car to work.
The A4 takes a different shape.
The B6 suits a usable lowered build: an Avant that still carries the family, a restrained saloon or an open-top car on well-chosen wheels. Start by inspecting the existing arms, joints and mounts. A new spring and damper package cannot take the play out of worn suspension.
Shared B6/B7 references sit alongside separate saloon and Avant applications, with more than one axle-load limit. Keep the body code, engine, drivetrain and plated loads together when comparing kits.
Audi introduced the B6 A4 in 2000. The Avant followed in 2001 and the Cabriolet in 2002. Its taller cabin, rounded edges and small upper grille give it a different character from the earlier B5; the later B7 arrived in 2004. Supplier date ranges can span both generations, so use the actual vehicle identity rather than a registration year alone.
Period-looking five-spoke or multi-spoke wheels work with the B6’s relatively clean body. Decide the wheel width, offset and tyre size before settling on a ride height, leaving room to steer and compress on the roads you use.
The body changes how the car is used as well as which reference appears in the catalogue. An Avant carrying luggage needs that load included in the finished setup. A Cabriolet needs its own application check; a kit naming the saloon or estate does not automatically cover the open-top body.
For a road car, describe the surface you drive on and the driveway you need to clear. Include the passengers or luggage it normally carries. For repeated circuit use, agree the tyre, weight, braking and alignment plan with the person who will set up the car before choosing the spring and damper specification.

Match the model year, engine and body style before comparing brands.

Saloon: front-wheel drive
BC’s current table assigns S-02 to the FWD saloon. Its published product title also mentions AWD, so that conflicting wording needs clarification. SPAX offers separate FWD load groups: maximum 1150/1130 kg or 1230/1150 kg front/rear. Match the exact engine and date row as well as those limits.
View FWD saloon references
Saloon: quattro
BC lists S-45 for the AWD saloon. Eibach PSS65-15-006-05-22 names the B6 8E2 quattro saloon within its stated engine and November 2000 to December 2004 rows, with front/rear limits of 1080/1165 kg. SPAX has two quattro load groups. Confirm the exact engine and supplied specification.

Avant: front-wheel drive
BC assigns S-45 to the FWD Avant. Eibach PSS65-15-006-03-22 and -04-22 name B6 8E5 FWD Avant applications from April 2001 to December 2004: front limits differ at 1080 and 1230 kg, with 1150 kg rear. Keep those load limits with the engine and date check.
View FWD Avant references
Avant: quattro
BC lists S-44 for the AWD Avant. Eibach PSS65-15-006-07-22 and -08-22 cover stated B6 8E5 quattro Avant rows, with 1080 or 1250 kg front and 1165 kg rear limits. SPAX’s quattro alternatives use their own engine/date rows and load limits; do not swap the conditions between brands.

Cabriolet: its own application
The shared Eibach 8H7 B6/8HE B7 rows and SPAX 8H/QB6 rows name particular engines, dates and drivetrains. Check the open-top car against the complete row and load limits. Some later engines belong to the shared B7 range; the combined listing is not proof that every engine was offered in a B6.

S4 and changed cars: check first
An S4, engine conversion or car with altered running gear needs an exact specification check. One shared Eibach Cabriolet row explicitly names S4 quattro; that does not establish fitment for an S4 saloon or Avant. Send the body, drivetrain, loads and current hardware before choosing a kit.

BC S-45 is the listed BR RN example for the FWD Avant; the same manufacturer row also names the AWD saloon. Confirm the exact body and retained front mounting parts before ordering. Choose the finished height around the actual wheels, everyday roads and normal load.
- Confirm the FWD Avant application
- Inspect retained front mounting parts
- Leave room for everyday travel and load

SPAX RSX3-1096 is the double-adjustable FWD example for its stated saloon, Avant and Cabriolet engine/date rows, up to 1150 kg front and 1130 kg rear. Separate bump and rebound controls need recorded changes and a setup plan. Confirm the exact application and intended use before choosing it.
- Match engine, body, dates and both load limits
- Record bump and rebound changes separately
- Plan tyres, brakes and measured alignment
Specify the whole car before the dampers.

Describe the actual body, drivetrain, weight, tyres and intended events. Agree spring and damper requirements, mounting hardware, available travel and setup support with the preparation team. Check the package against the car and its regulations before ordering.
- Describe the actual car and event use
- Agree the complete spring and damper specification
- Arrange alignment and setup support
The rear spring has its own seat.
On a standard Audi A4 B6 saloon factory rear, the rear spring and damper are mounted separately.
Component layout only. Mounts, dimensions and adjusters vary by kit.Audi’s B6 chassis programme shows an independent trapezium-link rear axle for front-wheel drive and quattro. The coil spring sits in its own inboard seat, beside the damper. This differs from the B5 arrangement: do not carry the earlier car’s spring-around-damper description into a B6 order.
The same general layout does not make every replacement kit interchangeable. Body, drivetrain, permitted axle loads and supplied hardware still need to match. Check how the exact kit adjusts the rear spring seat and damper; generic wording about a threaded strut does not prove a true rear-coilover conversion.
Understand spring seats and height adjustment
Check the space you will actually use.
Wide wheels can look comfortable under the arch while leaving too little room on the inside. Record width, offset, tyre size and any spacers. Have clearance checked at the intended height through the required steering and suspension movement, including the load the car normally carries.
Agree the condition work before fitting. The B6’s four-link front suspension has joints and bushes that need assessment alongside the mounts and fixings. Include the correct alignment procedure and any manufacturer-specified follow-up in the fitting plan.
Wheels, tyres and spacers
Check both the inner suspension gap and outer arch clearance. Some Eibach application notes say spacers may be needed even with original wheels; that is a check for the exact combination, not an instruction to add a universal spacer.
Front arms and retained mounts
Have the four-link front suspension inspected for wear. The listed BC BR RN builds do not supply front top mounts. Confirm which original parts are retained and which need renewing before the fitting date.
Body, drivetrain and axle loads
Record saloon, Avant or Cabriolet, the exact engine and FWD or quattro. Read the permitted front and rear loads from the car’s identification information and compare both with the chosen reference.
Height, travel and alignment
Agree a usable height within the exact kit’s limits. Check clearance and remaining movement before alignment. The factory B6 rear has camber and toe adjustment; have the settings and available adjustment assessed for the actual car.
The current A4 B6 range.
Compare the controls and hardware included in each range.
The current application table lists S-02 for A4 saloon FWD, S-44 for Avant AWD, and S-45 for saloon AWD or Avant FWD. The listed builds are BR RN. The S-02 product title also mentions AWD, in conflict with the manufacturer table; use it only as a conditional FWD example until that discrepancy is resolved.
View BC Racing A4 B6 kitsThe RSX and double-adjustable RSX3 rows divide FWD and quattro into two axle-load groups each. They also name specific saloon, Avant and Cabriolet engines and dates. Match the complete row and both load limits; the broad 2000 to 2007 wording includes shared-generation applications.
View SPAX A4 B6 kitsThe five Pro-Street-S references separate FWD Avant/Cabriolet, quattro saloon, and quattro Avant/Cabriolet applications with different load limits. The notes exclude levelling control and may require spacers or additional original parts. Confirm the current component list and certificate before ordering.

Questions about Audi A4 B6 coilovers.
Check the details before choosing your kit.
Which A4 does this B6 guide cover?
The B6 A4 generation introduced in 2000, with Avant following in 2001 and Cabriolet in 2002. The B7 arrived in 2004. Some kit listings span both generations, so match the body code, engine, drivetrain and exact application dates rather than relying on the registration year.
Is the B6 rear spring separate from the damper?
Yes. Audi’s B6 chassis programme shows the spring in its own seat beside the damper on the independent trapezium-link rear axle. Both FWD and quattro use that general layout. Follow the exact replacement kit’s hardware and adjustment instructions; this spring position alone does not establish fitment.
Do front-wheel-drive and quattro use the same kits?
Only where the exact manufacturer application explicitly covers both. BC separates FWD saloon, AWD Avant and the combined AWD saloon/FWD Avant reference. SPAX and Eibach have their own body, engine and load conditions. Do not infer interchangeability from the general rear layout.
Why are the axle-load limits different?
The listed kits have different permitted front and rear load limits. Compare both limits with the car’s identification information and the exact manufacturer application. A similar body, lowering range or spring appearance does not make two references interchangeable.
Can I fit an Avant kit to a saloon or Cabriolet?
Use only the bodies explicitly named for that reference. Some BC and Eibach rows cover more than one body, while others do not. The Cabriolet’s shared B6/B7 listing still needs the exact engine, date, drivetrain and axle-load check.
Why does the BC S-02 listing need an extra check?
The current manufacturer table lists S-02 for A4 saloon FWD, but the published product title also mentions AWD. Resolve that discrepancy before ordering. This guide treats S-02 as a conditional FWD example and does not assign it to quattro.
Will I need wheel spacers with Eibach Pro-Street-S?
The application notes say spacers may be needed, including with original wheels, and additional original parts may be required. That is not a blanket spacer recommendation. Have the exact wheel, tyre, suspension and body clearance checked and confirm the current component list and certificate.
How low should I set a B6 road car?
Choose a height within the exact kit’s permitted range that leaves clearance and travel for your wheels, roads and normal load. Check through the required steering and suspension movement before final alignment. The lowest stated position is not automatically suitable for an everyday car.
Let’s talk suspension.
Find your B6, then add its body, engine, drivetrain and permitted axle loads. Include the wheel specification and any earlier changes so we can check the exact reference.
