The longer, lower-looking A4.

An Avant carrying luggage asks something different of its suspension from a saloon used for track days. Both need enough room around the tyre and enough movement for the surfaces they meet. Decide on the wheels and normal load before agreeing the height.

The B8 range also includes S4, RS4 and Chinese-market A4L applications. Their names can appear beside ordinary A4s in a catalogue, but the kit conditions differ. Keep the body code, engine, drivetrain and both permitted axle loads together when checking a reference.

Audi introduced the B8 A4 in 2007. Its longer-looking bonnet, broad grille and swept headlamps give it a different shape from the B7. The B9 followed in 2015, which makes the changeover years a poor substitute for a chassis check.

Audi announced a revised A4 and S4 range in October 2011, changing the lights, grille and bonnet. The facelift is often called B8.5. A different lamp shape helps identify the car; the exact kit still needs its body, engine and production-date row checked.

On an early saloon, a silver five-arm or multi-spoke wheel keeps the original shape clean. A modest drop can close the arch gap without making the lowest setting the target. Check a chosen wheel’s width and offset before adding spacers or setting the final height.

An Avant needs space with its usual passengers and luggage aboard. If the same car will do circuit days, describe the tyres, brakes and expected use to the setup specialist. That gives them something more useful to work from than a request to make the car as low as possible.

Give the preparation team the body, drivetrain, weight and tyre specification, including any DRC or electronic damping conversion. Agree spring and damper requirements with mounting hardware and available movement. The road-car catalogue cannot settle those choices for a stripped or substantially altered car.

  • Provide the actual build and event requirements
  • Agree springs, dampers and mounting hardware together
  • Arrange measured setup and ongoing inspection

On a standard Audi A4 B8, the rear spring and damper are mounted separately.

Component layout only. Mounts, dimensions and adjusters vary by kit.

The A4 ’08 technical programme shows the rear coil spring in its own inboard seat beside the damper. The spring is separate from the damper on this factory arrangement.

Confirm the rear spring seat, damper and height-adjustment parts supplied with the chosen reference. Electronic damping or an RS4’s DRC needs its own replacement plan. This component view does not establish what a conversion requires.

Check the space your wheels need.

Record wheel width, offset, tyre size and any spacer thickness. Have the fitter check the inner suspension gap and outer arch at the intended height through steering and suspension movement, with the car’s normal load aboard. A wheel that clears while parked may need more room in use.

Inspect the suspension arms, joints, bushes and upper mounting parts before fitting. Agree which original parts the kit retains, how any damping-control system will be handled and when the final alignment will be carried out.

Factory suspension and starting height

Audi’s A4 ’08 programme distinguishes standard 1BA, sport 1BE at 20 mm below standard, rough-road 1BR at 13 mm above it and electronically controlled 1BL at the sport height. Confirm the actual equipment and previous changes before interpreting a kit’s lowering range.

Wheel width, offset and load

Check the complete wheel and tyre combination with the load you normally carry. Eibach notes that spacers may be required even with original wheels. Specify them only after the inner and outer clearances have been assessed.

Original mounts and damping controls

The listed BC BR RN builds retain front mounting parts; AST uses original upper mounts, and the exact TEIN A4L reference specifies STD mounts front and rear. Electronic damping may need to be disabled or otherwise addressed under the chosen kit’s instructions.

Alignment at the usable height

Set the agreed height and complete clearance checks before alignment. Ask the specialist to assess the available adjustment on the actual car. Include any changed arms and the manufacturer’s fitting and follow-up requirements.

Questions about Audi A4 B8 coilovers.

Check the details before choosing your kit.

Are B8 and B8.5 separate A4 generations?

B8.5 is a common name for the facelifted B8, announced in the updated A4 and S4 range in October 2011. Audi introduced the B8 in 2007 and its B9 successor in 2015. Use the exact body, engine, drivetrain and kit dates when checking a changeover-year car.

Does the A4 B8 have a separate rear spring and damper?

Yes. The A4 ’08 technical programme shows the rear coil spring in its own inboard seat beside the damper. Confirm the spring seats, dampers and adjustment parts supplied with the exact replacement kit. That factory layout alone does not establish an RS4 DRC conversion specification.

Why are there four Eibach B8 references?

They separate 8K2 saloon and 8K5 Avant applications into front-load groups. FWD and quattro rows also have different rear limits. For example, saloon -01-22 has a 1080 kg front limit with 1245 kg rear for FWD or 1225 kg rear for quattro. Check the complete engine and date row as well as both loads.

Can I keep the factory electronic damper control?

Confirm the replacement plan for the exact car and kit. Eibach’s note 101 says electronic damper control ceases to operate and addresses fault handling and possible Pro-Tronic support where available. Its notes also exclude levelling control. An S4 badge, drive-select button or general B8 listing does not establish compatibility.

Does the listed TEIN FLEX Z kit fit a UK A4 B8?

VSGB4-C1AA2 is specifically listed for the Chinese-market A4L B8, 2009 to 2014, 2000 cc FWD 35 TFSI. It retains the original upper mounts. Check a standard-wheelbase UK A4, quattro or a different engine individually; the A4L row does not approve those applications.

Does AST A2106S cover both saloon and Avant?

The official workbook names A4 B8 FWD, A4 quattro B8 and S4 B8 AWD from 2007 to 2016 but leaves the body unspecified. Confirm your exact body and factory suspension equipment before ordering. The listed package uses original upper mounts and a separate rear spring arrangement.

Can I use an ordinary A4 kit on an RS4 Avant?

Use the explicit RS4 application and confirm the current hardware. BC lists S-49 for the 2012 to 2015 RS4 Avant AWD. Establish whether DRC is retained or a previous conversion has been made, then agree the complete replacement specification. Other A4 and S4 rows do not approve that change.

Is the quoted drop additional to factory sport suspension?

Do not assume that. Audi’s A4 ’08 programme puts the 1BE sport chassis 20 mm below standard, with 1BL electronic damping at the sport height. Confirm the actual factory chassis and later modifications, then check the baseline and adjustment limits used by the selected kit.
