The B9 moves to MLB evo.

A B9 saloon on a tidy wheel upgrade can look settled with a modest drop. Keep enough travel for the roads you drive, and check the tyre clearance using the actual wheel width, offset and spacers.

The listed range spans ordinary A4s, performance Avants and Chinese-market A4L imports. Start with the application below; each product still needs matching to the engine, build details and original suspension.

Audi introduced this A4 generation to Western European dealers in autumn 2015. The saloon and Avant kept the familiar A4 outline, while the MLB evo platform brought a new suspension design. A five-link rear axle replaced the previous generation's trapezoidal-link arrangement.

The B9 suits the owner who wants an everyday car with a more deliberate stance. A wheel change makes a visible difference; choosing the running height takes more thought when the car still carries passengers, luggage or a full boot of tools. Decide how it needs to work before measuring the arch gap.

S4 and RS4 applications need their own checks. The S4 brought a turbocharged V6 in this generation, and the new RS4 Avant was unveiled in 2017. Their supplier rows distinguish body style and original suspension, including the RS4's DRC provision. An ordinary A4 row cannot settle those details.

China received a new long-wheelbase A4L in autumn 2016. Keep that market identity with an imported car: the listed TEIN application is for a Chinese-market 40 TFSI with front-wheel drive and 53mm original struts. Later B9 body revisions also need checking against the chosen manufacturer's dates and certificate.

A4 saloon: identify drive and damper size

BC separates 48.5mm and 53mm FWD saloon applications, including a specific 53mm EDC row. Bilstein, Eibach and AST have their own limits. Give the engine and drivetrain, then check the exact original strut size and factory damping equipment.

A4 Avant: keep the estate application

BC lists separate FWD Avant kits for 48.5mm, 53mm and 53mm with EDC. The Bilstein listing also has an Avant application table. Check the rear axle rating and the actual load you carry when discussing height; a saloon label alone does not approve an Avant.

S4 or RS4: match the exact performance model

The BC S4 Avant rows distinguish 53mm and 48.5mm dampers. Its RS4 Avant rows distinguish cars with and without DRC. Bilstein and AST also name specific S4 applications. Match the actual S4 or RS4, body style and original system within the product details before choosing a reference.

A4L import: keep the Chinese-market specification

TEIN VSGF6-C1AA3 names the Chinese-market B9 40 TFSI, front-wheel drive and 53mm original struts. Bilstein has a separate A4L application row. Provide the original market and build details; registration in the UK does not turn an A4L kit into a standard-wheelbase A4 application.

Choose an adjustment system you can use consistently.

Read the buying advice

Bilstein's B16 PSS10 combines height adjustment with ten damping settings. The 48-275071 example needs the exact non-electronic application and axle ratings checked. Start with the manufacturer's instructions, keep a record of changes and have the alignment set at the chosen height before planning circuit use.

Send the exact B9 model, tyre specification and intended circuit use with the enquiry. Discuss spring choice, working travel and the adjustment access you need. The current road-car listings do not establish a complete race specification, and the S4 or RS4 badge still needs its own application check.

Separate rear spring and damperThe coil spring rests between its own seats, beside a separate shock absorber. This fixed component diagram does not show vehicle dimensions, mounting hardware or suspension movement.SpringDamper

On a standard Audi A4 B9, the rear spring and damper are mounted separately.

Component layout only. Mounts, dimensions and adjusters vary by kit.

Audi's B9 rear-axle drawing shows the coil spring sitting inboard on its own seat, alongside a separate damper. The five-link arrangement differs from the earlier A4's trapezoidal-link rear axle. A coilover kit can retain that separate rear spring position while providing an adjustable spring seat.

Read the selected kit's rear adjustment instructions. The spring seat and damper mounting do different jobs, and the kit's name alone does not describe how to set either one. Keep electronic damping or DRC requirements in the fitting plan for the exact model.

Check the wheels and original hardware together.

Ask the fitter to identify the existing suspension before ordering. A previous owner may have changed springs or dampers, and a kit title may leave out the drivetrain distinction printed in the manufacturer's application list. Record the original equipment, strut size and any electrical connections.

Bring the wheel widths, offsets, tyre sizes and spacer thicknesses. Clearance needs checking through steering and suspension movement, with the normal passenger or luggage load considered. Set the final height before the alignment and follow any required headlamp or assistance-system checks.

Wheels, tyres and spacers

A wider wheel or spacer changes where the tyre sits under the arch. Check inner and outer clearance through movement using the actual tyres, including the intended load in an Avant.

EDC and DRC

Identify the original system by specification and inspection. Ask which electrical or hydraulic provisions the chosen kit needs and whether extra parts are required; an application marked with EDC does not promise factory-button control of replacement dampers.

Arms, joints and alignment

Have the retained links, bushes and mounting points inspected. Agree the running height before alignment, and keep a record of the finished settings for later tyre or wheel changes.

Axle ratings and body style

Compare the identification-plate axle limits with the exact product row. An Avant, quattro model or imported A4L can have different requirements from the saloon shown in a range photograph.

BC Racing

The B9 rows distinguish FWD saloon and Avant damper sizes, EDC applications and separate AWD S4 or RS4 Avant kits. Use the manufacturer code and the exact row together; do not extend the ordinary A4 FWD kits to quattro by their title.

Bilstein

The listed B16 PSS10 48-275071 has separate application rows for A4, Avant and A4L as well as other Audi models. It excludes electronic suspension control and carries axle-load limits. Keep each row's lowering range with that vehicle.

Eibach

The three Pro-Street S references distinguish original damper diameter and axle ratings. The -01 and -02 A4 rows exclude four-wheel drive; -09 has different ratings and lowering figures. Read the exact certificate and electronic-damper notes before choosing.

AST

ACU-A2110S is listed as a 5100 Street kit with rebound adjustment, original-equipment top mounts and a separate rear spring arrangement. Its application table specifies 48.5mm struts and distinct A4 or S4 rows. Confirm body style and original equipment with the enquiry.

Questions about Audi A4 B9 coilovers.

Check the details before choosing your kit.

Why do B9 kits list different front-damper diameters?

The applications distinguish the original hardware. BC names 48.5mm and 53mm rows; other manufacturers may use 49mm terminology for their own applications. Check the exact maker's row against the car, rather than choosing by an approximate measurement or assuming those labels are interchangeable.

Does an A4 B9 coilover kit automatically fit quattro?

Check the exact drivetrain application. BC's ordinary B9 saloon and Avant rows here specify FWD, while other products have their own quattro applications. The Eibach -01 and -02 A4 rows explicitly exclude four-wheel drive.

What needs checking with EDC or RS4 DRC?

Identify the original system and match the appropriate kit row. BC separates EDC and DRC applications, Bilstein 48-275071 excludes electronic suspension control, and Eibach gives electronic-damper fitting notes. Confirm the exact kit's provisions and any additional parts before ordering; factory controls should not be assumed to operate replacement dampers.

Is the A4 B9 rear spring separate from the damper?

Yes. Audi's rear-axle drawing shows a separate coil spring inboard of the damper within the five-link rear suspension. Follow the chosen kit's instructions for its rear spring seat and damper; a coilover kit name does not mean the rear spring must surround the damper.

Can I use the Chinese-market A4L kit on a normal UK A4?

The TEIN VSGF6-C1AA3 application names the Chinese-market A4L B9 40 TFSI with front-wheel drive and 53mm original struts. Keep the original market and body specification with an import enquiry. That row does not establish fitment on a standard-wheelbase UK A4.

Do saloon and Avant listings need checking separately?

Yes. BC has distinct FWD Avant references, and other makers use body-specific rows or limits. Include the body style and identification-plate axle ratings, and discuss the usual passenger and luggage load when agreeing height.

How much can I lower a B9 with upgraded wheels?

Use the chosen product's application-specific range, then have the actual wheel and tyre clearance checked through steering and suspension movement. Original sports suspension can affect the quoted drop. Wheel width, offset and spacers all need including in the fitting plan.

Will the registration finder confirm the exact suspension kit?

The finder helps identify the car. Give the engine, body style, original market and suspension equipment as well, with wheel dimensions and details of earlier changes, so the exact product application can be checked.
