Audi A5 F5 / B9.
The coilover guide.
Shop the coiloversGive the A5 a stance that works beyond the driveway. Start with the body and driven wheels, identify the factory dampers, then choose a height with room for the tyres and the journeys ahead.
The second-generation A5.
A clean wheel design and a measured drop suit the F5’s long doors and low roof. Before choosing either, write down the wheel width, offset and tyre size. The gap that looks right while parked still has to accommodate steering, suspension movement and the load you carry.
The current kit references take different routes through this generation. BC Racing separates front-wheel-drive applications by diameter and electronic damping. Eibach adds engine and axle-load conditions, while Bilstein explicitly names Coupé and Sportback rows. Keep those distinctions with the order.
Audi introduced the second-generation A5 Coupé in 2016, keeping the long bonnet and low, two-door profile of the original. Underneath, the rear suspension changed from the earlier trapezoidal-link arrangement to a five-link design. The B8 guide and its parts are therefore a separate reference.
The family includes the five-door Sportback and fabric-roof Cabriolet as well as the Coupé. In Audi’s later technical description, the Sportback has a longer wheelbase and more luggage space. Think about passengers and luggage when choosing the height, particularly if the car has to cover everyday miles as well as weekend drives.
The update offered in Europe from autumn 2019 brought a honeycomb grille, revised bumpers and a touchscreen in place of the earlier rotary MMI controller. Those visible changes help identify the car, but a facelift appearance cannot confirm its dampers, permitted loads or a kit’s engine coverage.
For a modified F5, settle the wheel and tyre specification before asking for an especially low setting. A larger wheel, a spacer or a replacement arm changes the clearance check. S5 and RS5 builds need their named applications and original damping systems checked individually; the newer A5 Avant belongs to another generation.

Match the model year, engine and body style before comparing brands.

Coupé: F53 / F5P
Eibach names this body from June 2016, with separate front-wheel-drive and diesel-quattro rows. Bilstein’s retained Coupé application runs from June 2016 to February 2020 and excludes electronic suspension control. Check the exact engine, build date and both permitted axle loads.
View Coupé references
Sportback: F5A / F5F
Bilstein 48-275071 explicitly lists Sportback engines from August 2016 to February 2020, without electronic suspension control and within its axle-load limits. The Eibach rows retained here name F53/F5P, so they cannot be extended to the Sportback from a shared F5 label.

Cabriolet: confirm the open car
The Coupé’s application does not establish Cabriolet fitment. The body-unspecified BC and AST rows also need clarification before an open car is ordered against them. Include the engine, build date, permitted loads and factory damping details in an enquiry.

Front-wheel drive: measure the specified unit
BC S-26 and S-29 identify 53 mm and 48.5 mm FWD applications; the maker leaves body information blank. Eibach -01-22 specifies 53 mm, while -02-22 specifies 49 mm in the clamping area. Keep each manufacturer’s wording and confirm the exact reference instead of rounding one size into another.
View FWD references
Electronic damping: plan the replacement
BC’s FWD S-34 and S-36 rows explicitly say with EDC, split between 53 mm and 48.5 mm. That does not promise the factory damping controls remain functional. Agree the body application, supplied components and any fault-management work before choosing one.
View EDC-labelled references
S5, RS5 and altered cars
Bilstein names particular S5 Coupé and Sportback engines in its non-electronic application rows. AST names S5 F5 AWD with a 48.5 mm reference, leaving the body blank. An RS5, damping conversion or car with changed arms needs its own check; those references do not approve every performance model.

Provide the car’s weight, tyres, mounting hardware and event use before choosing springs and dampers for a developed build. Tell the preparation team about changed arms, removed weight and any factory damping conversion. Agree the required specification with the people preparing the car.
- Describe the tyres, weight changes and event use
- Agree the mounts and available suspension movement
- Arrange measured setup and regular inspection
Five links, with the spring beside the damper.
On a standard Audi A5 F5, the rear spring and damper are mounted separately.
Component layout only. Mounts, dimensions and adjusters vary by kit. This generation uses an independent five-link rear axle. The rear coil spring has its own seat on the suspension arm, separate from the damper. The Audi dealer’s OEM parts diagram shows the spring, its upper and lower seats, and the damper as distinct components.
A rear height adjuster and replacement damper must be specified for that arrangement. Confirm the parts, mounts and adjustment limits supplied with the exact kit. The shared layout does not make Coupé, Sportback, Cabriolet, FWD and quattro applications interchangeable.

Leave room for the wheel to move.
Check the inner gap to the suspension as well as the tyre’s position under the arch. Give the fitter the wheel width, offset, tyre size and spacer thickness. Clearance needs checking through steering and suspension movement at the proposed height, with the normal load considered.
Inspect joints, bushes, spring seats and mounting parts before installing the kit. Agree the electronic-damping work first if the car has it. Final alignment and any affected headlamp or driver-assistance checks belong in the fitting plan.
Establish the factory suspension
Audi offered standard, sport and electronically controlled damping configurations. Identify the actual equipment from the car and its records. A drive-select menu or S line exterior badge cannot by itself establish which dampers are fitted.
Treat wheel changes as part of the setup
Width, offset and tyre dimensions affect the space on both sides of the wheel. Check those with any spacers before choosing the final ride height. Reassess clearance after changing the wheel specification, not just when the suspension is first fitted.
Agree the damping-control work
Eibach note 101 says electronic damper control will no longer operate with the kit and describes fault handling, recommending Pro-Tronic where available. Bilstein’s retained rows exclude electronic suspension control. BC’s EDC-labelled application needs its exact replacement plan confirmed.
Set the height before alignment
Follow the exact kit’s instructions for setting and settling the installation, then complete clearance checks and alignment. Record the final settings and any changed arms or bushes. For track days, note tyres and conditions alongside each adjustment.

Compare the controls and hardware included in each range.
S-26/S-29 are FWD 53/48.5 mm applications; S-34/S-36 add with-EDC wording. The maker’s rows cover 2016 to 2024 F5 but leave the body unspecified. Confirm that detail, the supplied hardware and the adjustment instructions for the exact kit.

Questions about Audi A5 F5 / B9 coilovers.
Check the details before choosing your kit.
Is the F5 A5 the same application as the earlier B8?
No. This guide covers the second-generation A5 introduced in 2016, commonly described as F5 or B9. Audi changed the rear axle to a five-link design. The earlier B8 and the later A5 Avant need their own application checks; a shared A5 name does not establish kit fitment.
Are the A5 F5 rear spring and damper separate?
Yes. The rear coil spring sits in its own seat on the suspension arm, beside the damper, on an independent five-link axle. The OEM parts diagram supplied through Audi’s dealer catalogue shows these as separate components. Confirm the exact replacement spring seats, dampers and mounts with the kit.
Can I treat 48.5 mm and 49 mm as the same kit size?
Keep each manufacturer’s exact wording. BC and AST use 48.5 mm references in their application tables, while Eibach note 252 specifies 49 mm in the clamping area. Other references specify 53 mm. Have the fitter confirm the required unit and part number; do not round a measurement into an assumed interchangeability.
Do all the listed A5 kits fit quattro?
No. The four BC F5 rows explicitly specify FWD, and Eibach -01/-02 exclude 4WD. Eibach -09 names particular diesel-quattro Coupé engines. Bilstein lists named quattro Coupé and Sportback applications, while AST separately names S5 F5 AWD. Check the exact row, body and equipment.
Can I use a Coupé kit on a Sportback or Cabriolet?
Only where the manufacturer explicitly approves the body and complete vehicle specification. Bilstein’s retained rows name Coupé and Sportback separately. The Eibach rows here name F53/F5P; they do not establish Sportback or Cabriolet coverage. The broader BC and AST body blanks need confirmation.
Will my factory electronic damping still work?
Confirm the exact replacement plan before ordering. Eibach says its kit removes the factory damping-control function and addresses fault handling. Bilstein’s retained application excludes electronic suspension control. BC’s with-EDC wording identifies an application but does not by itself promise retained factory control.
What distinguishes the three Eibach F5 references?
The -01 and -02 FWD Coupé rows have 1135 kg front and 1090 kg rear limits, quoted 35 to 60 mm lowering and 53 mm or 49 mm clamping-area specifications respectively. The -09 diesel-quattro Coupé row has 1195/1200 kg limits, 40 to 65 mm lowering at each end and 53 mm. Match the complete engine row and current certificate.
How low should a road-driven A5 be set?
Choose a usable position within the exact kit’s approved range after checking tyre clearance, suspension movement and normal load. The manufacturer’s lowering figure depends on the specified factory baseline and equipment. Complete the clearance checks and final alignment before treating the setup as finished.
Let’s talk suspension.
Find your A5, then include its body, engine, driven wheels, permitted axle loads and factory damping details. Add the wheel specification and previous suspension changes so the exact kit can be checked.
