Which 2 DJ do you have?3 listed kits · 2 brandsReviewed 4 November 2026

The small Mazda with the longer bonnet.

The DJ brought a longer bonnet and a new chassis to the Mazda2 in 2014. In Japan it kept the Demio name until the 2019 update. A registration search can return either name, so use the chassis identification and build date when choosing suspension.

There are three current listings here: BC N-30, BC N-31 and TEIN VSMC2-C1AA3. N-30 and N-31 distinguish the driven wheels; TEIN lists specific Japanese front-wheel-drive cars. The Toyota-supplied Mazda2 Hybrid introduced in Europe in 2022 is a different car and sits outside this guide.

Mazda began production at Hofu in July 2014. The new shape brought the KODO design language and Skyactiv chassis to its compact hatchback. Japan initially offered 1.3 petrol and 1.5 diesel engines, with front-wheel-drive sales scheduled first and AWD following in December.

The 2019 Japanese update brought the Mazda2 name, a revised grille and changes to the seats and suspension. Those later cars remain part of the DJ discussion, with their own chassis, engine and production-date checks. A facelift photograph alone cannot identify the correct spring package.

For a daily driver, decide how much wheel clearance and ride height you need before choosing larger wheels. A track-day build adds tyre and temperature demands, while a stripped competition car needs its operating weight considered afresh. The useful modification order begins with the actual car, sound mounting hardware and measured alignment.

Weight removal, a cage or changed powertrain alters the setup brief. Supply the weight with driver and fuel, tyres and intended event, then identify any changed hubs, arms or rear mounting points. Agree the spring package, usable damper movement and service arrangements. An inverted front strut alone cannot establish a complete competition specification.

A separate rear spring and damper.

Separate rear spring and damperThe coil spring rests between its own seats, beside a separate shock absorber. This fixed component diagram does not show vehicle dimensions, mounting hardware or suspension movement.SpringDamper

On a standard Mazda 2 DJ, the rear spring and damper are mounted separately.

Component layout only. Mounts, dimensions and adjusters vary by kit.

Mazda's original DJ chassis paper shows front struts and a rear torsion-beam arrangement. The rear springs use their own seats beside the dampers. Exact AWD component evidence also identifies separate rear units; the FWD and AWD kit references still need to be kept distinct.

Inspect spring pads, seats and damper mounts, then follow the selected kit's rear-height and spring-retention instructions. TEIN specifically requires the original rear spring insulator to be modified on its listed Mazda applications. Confirm that work before fitting. A rear spring-height platform does not itself provide independent camber or toe adjustment.

Understand rear spring height and preload

Set the height with the actual wheel package.

Tell the fitter the width, offset and tyre size on both axles, including spacers. Check clearance beside the front strut at steering lock and through suspension movement, then check the rear arches with normal loads considered. Have the final alignment measured at the agreed running height.

Include front bearings, mounting parts and rear beam bushes in the inspection. On an AWD car, identify the driveline and any altered rear hardware before the work starts. Keep the final height and alignment record so later wheel or tyre changes can be checked against it.

Wheel width and offset

A wheel can clear the arch while leaving too little room beside the spring or strut. Record the complete tyre and spacer package, then have clearance checked through steering and suspension movement. Include the rear with the loads the car normally carries.

Front mounts and adjustment access

BR RA and RM MA have different front arrangements. TEIN lists rubber upper mounts for its exact applications. Confirm which bearings, mounts and fitting parts are supplied or reused, and how the adjusters will be reached once the car is assembled.

Rear seats and insulators

Identify existing replacement springs, altered seats and worn pads. The TEIN rear-insulator modification is an application requirement, not optional styling work. Have the installer confirm the correct instructions, spring retention and available movement at the chosen height.

Tyres and operating weight

A lightly loaded road car and a caged track car need different setup discussions. Give the fitter the tyre specification and weight with driver and fuel. Keep tyre pressures and damper changes in the same record so the effects can be assessed.

BC Racing

N-30 names DJ3FS FWD; N-31 names DJ5AS AWD. Both current listings offer BR RA and RM MA. The recorded spring packages differ: N-30 is 4.5/2.5 kg/mm, N-31 is 5/2.5 kg/mm front/rear. Select the exact configuration and confirm its mounting parts. The parent starting price applies to BR, not every series.

Questions about Mazda 2 DJ coilovers.

Check the details before choosing your kit.

Is a Japanese Demio the same family as this Mazda2?

The DJ-generation car launched as Demio in Japan in 2014 and was renamed Mazda2 there in 2019. That family relationship helps identify the car, but the kit still needs the correct chassis, engine, market and build-date application.

Does this cover the Toyota-supplied Mazda2 Hybrid?

No. Mazda announced that separate full Hybrid for Europe with sales from spring 2022. These DJ coilover references must not be applied to it because it carries the Mazda2 badge.

How do the BC front-wheel-drive and AWD references differ?

The maker table names N-30 for DJ3FS FWD and N-31 for DJ5AS AWD. Both have BR RA and RM MA configurations in the current selector. The recorded standard spring packages are 4.5/2.5 kg/mm and 5/2.5 kg/mm respectively; confirm the actual supplied parts.

Which Mazda applications does the TEIN kit list?

TEIN lists Japanese Demio DJ3FS 1300 FWD from October 2014 to August 2018, Demio DJ5FS 1500 FWD from October 2014 to August 2019, and Japanese Mazda2 DJLFS or DJ5FS 1500 FWD from September 2019. Check the exact grades and height row on the product page. UK registration is not original-market confirmation.

Does the rear spring sit around the damper?

The DJ arrangement uses a separate rear spring and damper. Mazda documents the torsion-beam layout; the exact AWD component reference also shows separate units. Keep the FWD and AWD application references distinct and confirm the selected rear seats and mounting parts.

Does the TEIN kit need fitting modifications?

Each listed Mazda application row requires modification to the original rear spring insulator. Agree the exact work with the installer using the current supplied instructions. Optional electronic damping control needs its own compatibility and access check.

Can I use one lowering range for all the TEIN applications?

No. The Japanese DJ3FS Demio row recommends front changes of -45 to -25 mm and rear -40 to -20 mm. Other listed Mazda rows have different ranges. Use the exact application and distinguish a recommended setting from the maximum mechanical adjustment range.

Is the more expensive configuration automatically better for track use?

Choose around the tyres, load, event and useful damping controls. RM changes the front damper construction; it does not by itself specify springs, travel or the complete mounting package for a competition build. Discuss those requirements before selecting the configuration.

Let’s talk suspension.

Use the finder, then include the chassis code, engine, original market and driven wheels. Add the wheel package and any changed suspension hardware so the exact listing and configuration can be checked.
