The practical hatch before the rounded Mazda2.

A 2007 registration can belong to either the upright DY or the later, rounder DE. Check the chassis identification before choosing a kit. The DY packages listed here do not transfer to a later Mazda2 because the badge is the same.

BC lists N-20 for the front-wheel-drive DY. SPAX names the European 1.25, 1.4, 1.6 and 1.4 diesel applications from January 2003 to May 2007. Japanese Demio imports need their own check, particularly cars with electric rear-wheel drive.

Mazda introduced this shape in Japan as the redesigned Demio in August 2002. It appeared at the Paris show the following month as Mazda2, with European production planned at Ford's Valencia plant from the beginning of 2003. The tall five-door body put cabin access and a useful load space high on the brief.

The European announcement listed 1.25, 1.4 and 1.6 petrol engines plus a 1.4 common-rail diesel. Japan's launch range instead used 1.3 and 1.5 MZR engines in Cozy, Sport and Casual versions. Those differences matter when an imported Demio arrives with a familiar-looking body and an unfamiliar powertrain.

For a road build, leave enough movement for the people and luggage this tall hatch can carry. Smaller wheels with a useful tyre sidewall deserve consideration before a large drop. A circuit project needs its own spring and damping discussion using the actual tyres, operating weight and braking setup.

Read the buying advice

SPAX RSX3-1974 is the double-adjustable kit for the named European engines. Separate bump and rebound controls give the fitter more settings to work with; they also need a clear starting point and useful notes. Confirm the exact spring package and adjuster access. RSX987 is the single-adjustable alternative if you want a simpler control arrangement.

Tell us the event, tyres and operating weight, including driver and fuel. Include a cage, engine conversion and any rear suspension changes. The current DY listings do not establish a dedicated motorsport package for every developed car. Agree the springs, damper specification, mounting and service needs before choosing a kit for that job.

Separate rear spring and damperThe coil spring rests between its own seats, beside a separate shock absorber. This fixed component diagram does not show vehicle dimensions, mounting hardware or suspension movement.SpringDamper

On a standard Mazda 2 DY, the rear spring and damper are mounted separately.

Component layout only. Mounts, dimensions and adjusters vary by kit.

Mazda's original DY technical paper shows MacPherson struts at the front and a torsion-beam axle at the rear. The rear coils sit separately from the dampers, leaving the cabin and load floor clear. This is the original front-wheel-drive arrangement; an e-4WD import needs its own hardware check.

Check the rear spring pads, seats and damper mounts against the chosen kit. A threaded rear spring platform changes the seat position; it is not the same adjustment as a front strut lower bracket. Follow the exact instructions for travel and spring retention, and do not assume the kit adds independent rear camber or toe adjustment.

Understand rear height and spring seating
Red Mazda2 DY on an alignment lift with wheel-carried targets, front turnplates and rear slip plates

Set the height with the daily load in mind.

Have the front mounts and bearings, lower-arm bushes and rear beam bushes inspected before fitting. Include the spring pads, bump stops and damper mounting hardware in the parts discussion. Damping adjustment cannot repair a worn joint or a damaged mounting point.

Once the selected height is settled, have the alignment measured with the intended wheels and tyres. Check steering and arch clearance through suspension movement, with allowance for normal loads. Record the final settings so a later tyre or wheel change can be assessed against a known setup.

Wheels, offset and a loaded hatchback

Give the fitter the wheel width, offset, tyre size and any spacers. Check clearance with the passenger and luggage use you expect. A wheel that clears on a parked, empty car still needs room through suspension movement and at full steering lock.

Front mounts and lower-arm bushes

Inspect the rubber mounting parts and strut bearings, and identify any replacement arms or brackets. Confirm which parts the exact kit retains. Plan worn hardware into the fitting work instead of treating a new damper as a complete front-axle refresh.

Rear beam, seats and dampers

Check beam bushes, the condition of its mounting points and the spring pads. Identify previous spring or rear shock changes. Confirm the specified damper length and spring retention for the agreed height using the supplied kit instructions.

Diesel, imports and changed weight

Supply the original engine and market, especially for a 1.4 diesel or a Japanese Demio. Include an engine conversion, cage or stripped interior in the setup brief. Use actual operating weight when discussing springs rather than assuming all DY cars carry the same load.

BC Racing

N-20 is the manufacturer-listed Mazda2 DY front-wheel-drive reference; BR RS is the current shop configuration. BC's application table also marks DS DA, but that does not create an additional current shop listing. Confirm the exact supplied mounts and spring package instead of applying generic front-strut adjustment claims to the separate rear springs.

SPAX

RSX987 and double-adjustable RSX3-1974 share the named European engine and date row. The catalogue lists 35 to 65 mm front and rear, subject to its fitting conditions. Their control arrangements differ. The general RSX handbook is useful background, but its adjuster instructions and click counts should not be transferred blindly to RSX3.

Questions about Mazda 2 DY coilovers.

Check the details before choosing your kit.

Does this guide cover the later Mazda2 DE or DJ?

No. It covers the upright DY shape. The later DE and DJ generations have different references. A car registered during a model change needs its chassis and build date checked before a kit is selected.

Which current kits are listed for Mazda2 DY?

The current references are BC Racing BCR-N-20, SPAX RSX987 and SPAX RSX3-1974. BC names the DY front-wheel-drive application. SPAX names European 1.25, 1.4 and 1.6 petrol and 1.4 diesel cars from January 2003 to May 2007. Check the exact market and engine.

Are the DY rear springs separate from the dampers?

Yes. Mazda's original technical paper shows separate rear coils and dampers on a torsion-beam axle, with MacPherson struts at the front. Confirm the selected kit's rear seats, pads and mounting requirements.

What changes between SPAX RSX987 and RSX3-1974?

RSX987 is the single-adjustable reference; RSX3-1974 is listed as double adjustable with separate bump and rebound controls. Confirm the supplied instructions and starting settings for the exact kit. More controls do not establish a suitable setup on their own.

Can I order these for a Japanese Demio or e-4WD?

Have the exact application checked first. Japan's launch range used 1.3 and 1.5 engines, and Mazda added e-4WD in November 2003. The named European SPAX row does not establish those applications, while BC's N-20 table specifically names front-wheel drive.

Does 35 to 65 mm lowering mean I should use the lowest setting?

No. Those are the catalogue front and rear figures for the named SPAX application. The useful height depends on the original suspension, actual wheels, loads and available travel. Follow the exact fitting instructions and check clearance rather than treating the lowest setting as a target.

Will a rear spring platform adjust rear camber?

A threaded spring platform changes the rear spring seating position. It does not itself provide an independent camber or toe adjustment. Have the beam condition and final alignment measured with the chosen height and wheels.

Which package should I choose for a dedicated track build?

Discuss the actual tyres, operating weight, event and changed hardware first. The current DY range offers road and track-day choices, but a developed competition car needs its spring, damper and mounting specification agreed for that build. Registration lookup cannot establish later modifications.
