Mazda 3 BP.
The coilover guide.
Shop the coiloversThe BP pairs Mazda’s smooth-sided hatch and longer saloon with a torsion-beam rear. Identify the original market and exact application before choosing the spring package or damper controls.
The BP moves to a torsion-beam rear.
A BP hatch on larger wheels can look settled with a modest drop. Start with the clearance and travel it needs on your roads. The current BC Racing N-41 reference names BP8P and torsion-beam suspension; TEIN’s FLEX Z table separates specific Japanese, US and Chinese applications.
The fourth-generation Mazda3 arrived for 2019. The earlier BM and BN use different applications. Within the BP range, keep the body, engine, build date and driven wheels with the order, especially for an imported car.
Mazda unveiled the fourth-generation Mazda3 hatchback and saloon at the Los Angeles show in November 2018. The hatch’s rounded rear pillar and short tail gave it a different silhouette from the longer, separate-boot saloon. Mazda’s new vehicle architecture used front MacPherson struts and a newly developed torsion-beam rear, replacing the previous generation’s multi-link arrangement.
The UK range expanded during 2019. Mazda announced the Skyactiv-X petrol engine and the saloon for an autumn arrival, with a four-wheel-drive Skyactiv-X hatch also included in the launch specification. Skyactiv-X and Skyactiv-G used Mazda’s 24V M Hybrid system. That mild-hybrid description does not identify the earlier BYEFP Axela hybrid or make its suspension kit suitable for a BP.
For a modified BP, wheel choice and usable suspension movement deserve attention before the final ride height. A road car carrying passengers needs room to move over uneven surfaces. A car doing regular circuit sessions also needs a repeatable setup record and access to its adjusters. The available kits offer different controls, but their application details still come first.

For a confirmed N-41 application, BR RS is the road starting point. Its listed mounting package uses rubber front and rear mounts, and its damping adjustment changes compression and rebound together. Agree the spring specification and sensible running height with the fitter. An exact TEIN import application gives another route with twin-tube dampers and rubber mounts; check the car before comparing those two packages.
- Coupled compression and rebound
- Rubber mounts in the listed RS package
- Clearance for everyday loads
Use separate damping controls when the setup work calls for them.
Read the buying advice
N-41 ER adds remote reservoirs and independent compression and rebound adjustment. It is worth discussing for a car with regular circuit sessions and someone available to develop its settings. Plan protected hose routes and reservoir access before installation. BR can still serve occasional track days; moving to ER should follow a clear setup requirement. Confirm the ER mounting package with the order.
- Independent compression and rebound
- Plan reservoir and hose positions
- Record changes between sessions
Add the compression controls your testing can make use of.
Read the buying advice
The N-41 ZX option provides separate low-speed and high-speed compression adjustment alongside rebound. Those speeds refer to damper movement. Agree the springs, running weight, tyres and test plan with the person setting up the car. Confirm mounting parts and reservoir clearance for the exact package; extra controls need time and a useful baseline.
- Separate low- and high-speed compression
- Rebound control alongside compression
- Agree springs and a test programme
A torsion beam, with a separate rear spring.
On a standard Mazda 3 BP, the rear spring and damper are mounted separately.
Component layout only. Mounts, dimensions and adjusters vary by kit.The BP’s rear coil spring sits between its own seats on the torsion beam and body, separately from the damper. The front spring surrounds the strut. A kit sold as coilovers can therefore contain separate rear springs, height adjusters and dampers while retaining that layout.
Check the selected kit’s rear spring seats and any retained rubber parts. Set spring-seat height and damper length according to its instructions; they do different jobs. TEIN also notes that the BP’s structure makes rear damping adjustment difficult by hand and recommends its optional EDFC system. Discuss access before fitting.
Understand rear height and preload
Give the wheels room to move.
Supply the wheel width, offset, tyre size and any spacers before settling on a height. Inspect the inside of the tyre beside the front strut and spring platform, then the outside at the arch. Check steering lock and suspension movement with the loads the car normally carries.
Inspect bushes, joints, mounts and spring seats before the kit goes on. Agree a usable height, settle the suspension and measure the final alignment. Keep the settings with the spring specification so the next adjustment starts from known information.
Wheels, tyres and spacers
A wheel’s offset changes where its tyre sits relative to the strut and arch. Include spacers in that measurement. Check the actual tyre shape through steering and suspension movement at the proposed height; a photograph of another BP does not give those clearances.
Body, engine and driven wheels
Keep the saloon or hatchback body and FWD or AWD specification on the order. TEIN’s US FWD and AWD rows use different recommended height ranges despite sharing a kit number. Its Japanese engine and production-date rows also differ.
Rear hardware and adjuster access
Confirm the rear spring seats, reused rubber, bump stops and mounting parts for the kit supplied. Decide how rear damping will be adjusted once the car is assembled. Optional electronic adjustment needs its own compatibility and installation check.
Sensors and hose routing
The fitter should inspect brake hoses, ABS wiring and any relevant sensor links through the suspension’s movement. Reservoir hoses need protected routes with room for the wheels and surrounding parts. Use the exact kit’s instructions when arranging brackets and retained components.
A baseline for circuit days
Record height, alignment, tyre pressures and damper settings before making changes. Include the tyre model and conditions in track notes. Change one setting at a time and check what it did before adding another adjustment.

Questions about Mazda 3 BP coilovers.
Check the details before choosing your kit.
Which coilovers are currently listed for the Mazda3 BP?
The current range includes BC Racing N-41 for its named BP8P torsion-beam application and TEIN FLEX Z VSW02-C1AA3 for specific Japanese, US and Chinese applications. N-41 has BR RS, ER and ZX choices. Confirm the exact chassis and vehicle details before selecting an option.
Does the Mazda3 BP have a separate rear spring and damper?
Yes. Its torsion-beam rear carries the coil spring on its own seats, separately from the damper. The front spring surrounds the strut. Check the selected kit’s rear springs, adjusters, mounts and retained rubber against its fitting instructions.
Does the TEIN UK product page approve every UK-market BP?
No. The current VSW02-C1AA3 maker table has 16 rows covering Japanese, US and Chinese vehicles. It does not list a UK-market vehicle row. Use the original market, chassis, engine, grade and production period; UK registration alone does not establish a match.
Are TEIN’s FWD and AWD lowering ranges the same?
They differ in the named applications. For the US 2.5-litre sedan, TEIN recommends 25 to 45 mm front and 45 to 65 mm rear lowering for FWD, versus 30 to 50 mm front and 35 to 55 mm rear for AWD. Other rows have their own ranges; use the exact table entry.
Can I adjust the rear TEIN dampers easily by hand?
TEIN notes that the vehicle structure makes manual rear damping adjustment difficult and recommends its EDFC system. Discuss access and the compatible optional equipment before fitting. The recommendation does not mean an electronic controller is included with the kit.
What changes between BC Racing BR RS, ER and ZX?
BR adjusts compression and rebound together, with rubber mounts in this listed RS option. ER adds remote reservoirs and independent compression and rebound adjustment. ZX separates low- and high-speed compression alongside rebound. Agree the application, springs and supplied mounting parts before choosing the controls.
Can I use the earlier Axela hybrid kit on a BP M Hybrid?
Do not select it on the hybrid name. The earlier BYEFP Axela hybrid is a different generation and has a separate application. The BP’s M Hybrid label describes a mild-hybrid powertrain. Match the complete BP chassis and kit reference instead.
What should I measure before lowering a BP on wider wheels?
Give the fitter the wheel width, offset, tyre size and spacers. Check inner clearance at the strut and spring platform, and outer clearance at the arch through steering and suspension movement. Allow for normal loads and settle the car at its agreed height before final alignment.
Let’s talk suspension.
Tell us the chassis, original market and engine, plus the body, driven wheels and wheel package. We can check the application and discuss the right adjustment range for how you use the car.
