Mazda 6 GG/GY.
The coilover guide.
Shop the coiloversThe first Mazda6 combines double-wishbone front suspension with an independent multi-link rear. Identify the body, chassis and driven wheels before choosing between the FWD N-01 and AWD N-50 references.
A million built, with three different bodies.
A modest drop can bring the wheels into proportion with the GG's long roofline. Leave enough movement for the roads you use and the passengers or luggage you carry. On a GY estate, include the normal load when discussing springs and running height.
The Japanese-market name is Atenza. Keep the engine, original market and build date with the order, especially where an older catalogue groups several bodies under one reference. The later GH and GJ Mazda6 use different applications.
Mazda began producing the Mazda6 at Hofu in February 2002. By late February 2006, global production had reached one million. The range included a four-door saloon, a fastback-style five-door and a longer-roof estate, with the Atenza name used in Japan.
Mazda used double wishbones at the front and an E-type multi-link rear. The rear coil spring sits on its own seats beside the damper. Those component positions matter when fitting a replacement kit, even when the complete package is sold as coilovers.
The Mazdaspeed Atenza added a 2.3-litre turbo engine and electronically controlled all-wheel drive, with its Japanese launch planned for August 2005. Related overseas names include Mazda6 MPS and Mazdaspeed6. Keep the drivetrain and complete chassis with a suspension enquiry for one of these cars.

GG front-wheel drive
BC Racing's current global table names N-01 for the 2003 to 2008 FWD Mazda6, with GG3S as its chassis reference. Check the full chassis, engine and body against the order, particularly where a product title includes several chassis codes.

GG all-wheel drive
The current factory table gives the 2003 to 2008 AWD GG3P its own N-50 reference. Its listed RS package has a different rear spring rate from N-01. Confirm the drivetrain and exact model before choosing the application.

MPS, Mazdaspeed and imports
Include the full chassis and original market as well as the badge. Historic BC Japan information uses N-01 for Mazdaspeed Atenza, while the current global table separates an AWD N-50 reference. Ask us to confirm the application and spring package for your particular car.

Read the buying advice
For a confirmed FWD N-01 application, the listed BR RS package has rubber upper mounts and coupled compression and rebound adjustment. Agree the spring specification and running height with the fitter. An AWD car needs its own N-50 application check before choosing a package.
- Rubber mounts in the listed RS package
- Confirm the spring specification
- Allow for passengers and luggage
Use the matched kit with a measured setup.
Read the buying advice
The same FWD N-01 BR RS can be discussed for occasional circuit use. Start with serviceable bushes and joints, suitable tyres and a recorded alignment, then assess what needs changing. Give the fitter the running weight and intended tyre before agreeing different springs.
- The same verified N-01 package
- Record alignment and damper settings
- Inspect tyres and brakes before circuit use
Agree the complete specification around the build.
Read the buying advice
For frequent sessions or competition, discuss the car's running weight, tyres, permitted modifications and adjustment requirements before ordering. Ask about the available damper and spring specification for that build, including the controls and fitting work it needs.
- A specification enquiry
- Include tyres and running weight
- Check the relevant competition rules
Multi-link rear suspension, with a separate spring.
On a standard Mazda 6 GG/GY, the rear spring and damper are mounted separately.
Component layout only. Mounts, dimensions and adjusters vary by kit.The GG/GY rear coil spring has its own seats, separately from the damper, within an independent multi-link arrangement. At the front, the spring surrounds the damper in the double-wishbone suspension. A package called coilovers can retain separate rear springs and dampers.
Check the selected kit's spring seats, adjusters, mounts and retained rubber against its instructions. The rear spring-seat adjustment and damper length do different jobs. Use the specified fitting procedure and agree a running height that leaves usable suspension movement.
Understand rear height and preload
Give the arches room to work.
Provide the wheel width, offset, tyre size and any spacers before choosing the final height. Check the tyre against the suspension and spring platform on the inside, and the arch on the outside, through steering and suspension movement. Include the car's usual passengers and luggage.
Inspect spring seats, mounts, bushes, joints and the surrounding structure before fitting. Set the agreed running height, settle the suspension and measure the final alignment. Keep the results with the spring and damper settings so later adjustments start from a known baseline.
Wheel and tyre clearance
Offset and spacers change where the wheel sits. Include the actual tyre model and size because shoulder shapes vary. Check clearance through steering and suspension movement at the proposed height.
Condition before adjustment
Worn bushes, joints or mounts can leave a new damper working around an existing fault. Inspect them and the spring-seat areas before installation. Complete any repairs before using alignment settings to judge the suspension.
Estate loads
Tell the fitter what the car normally carries. A lightly loaded car does not show the space needed for luggage, passengers or regular equipment. Confirm the estate application and spring package before agreeing its running height.
AWD and modified drivetrains
Record the driven wheels and any drivetrain or hub changes. Check hoses, wiring and relevant sensor links through suspension movement. Use the exact kit's instructions for brackets and retained parts.
A repeatable track baseline
Record tyre pressures, height, alignment and damper settings before making changes. Keep the tyre model and conditions with the notes, then change one setting at a time and assess its effect.

Questions about Mazda 6 GG/GY coilovers.
Check the details before choosing your kit.
Which coilovers are currently listed for the first Mazda6?
The current range has BC Racing N-01 and N-50 BR RS listings. BC's present global table separates the FWD N-01 reference from AWD N-50. Confirm the complete chassis, engine, body and market before choosing; estates and MPS applications need their own check.
Does the Mazda6 GG/GY have a separate rear spring and damper?
Yes. Its independent multi-link rear carries the spring on separate seats beside the damper. The front uses double wishbones with the spring around the damper. Check the actual kit's rear springs, adjusters and retained parts against its fitting instructions.
What changes between the N-01 and N-50 applications?
The current factory references name N-01 for FWD GG3S and N-50 for AWD GG3P. The listed RS defaults also differ at the rear: 8 kg/mm for N-01 and 10 kg/mm for N-50, both with 9 kg/mm front springs. Choose the application for the actual car and confirm the supplied specification.
Is N-01 confirmed for every GY estate?
An older BC Japan table lists GY3W and GYEW estates under N-01, but the current global reference is narrower. Send the complete chassis, engine, original market and usual load so the present supplied application can be confirmed before ordering.
Which kit should I choose for a Mazda6 MPS or Mazdaspeed6?
Ask for an exact application check using the full chassis and original market. Historic Japan information and the current global FWD/AWD references differ. A shared model name or GG3P label alone does not confirm the mounting and spring package supplied for your MPS or Mazdaspeed car.
Why do older tables show different spring rates?
The older Japan table uses a different specification from the current listings. Our listed defaults are 9 kg/mm front and 8 rear for N-01, and 9 front and 10 rear for N-50. Confirm the actual springs with the order because the supplied package can differ from an older reference.
Do I need a different kit for occasional track days?
A matched BR RS package can be discussed for road and occasional circuit use. Its suitability depends on the car, tyres, spring specification and setup. For frequent circuit work or competition, provide the running weight and requirements so the available specification can be checked.
What should I check before lowering a Mazda6 on wider wheels?
Supply wheel width, offset, tyre size and spacers. Check the inside at the suspension and spring platform, and the outside at the arch, through steering and suspension movement. Include normal passengers and luggage, then settle the agreed height before the final alignment.
Let’s talk suspension.
Tell us the chassis, body, engine and driven wheels, plus the original market and wheel package. For an estate, include its usual load; for an MPS or import, keep the complete model details with the enquiry.
