The GJ's long bonnet and low roof suit a modest drop. Match the kit to its full chassis and original market, then leave enough movement for the journeys and loads you actually carry.

The Mazda6 that brought the long bonnet.

A motorway saloon and an estate carrying passengers and luggage ask different things of a suspension setup. Start with the car's usual load and the roads it covers. Wheel width, tyre shape and available travel will help decide a useful height.

The current range includes BC Racing N-25 for the named GJ2FP FWD application and TEIN FLEX Z for specific Japanese-market saloons and estates. Keep body, engine and market details together when checking a kit. An Atenza import and a UK-registered Mazda6 can share a badge without sharing the listed application.

Mazda introduced this generation in 2012, with the saloon shown at Moscow and the estate at Paris. The Japanese Atenza launch followed in November. Its KODO bodywork had a long bonnet and swept front wings, while the SKYACTIV programme brought new engines and a different chassis from the preceding GH.

The GJ has MacPherson struts at the front and independent multi-link suspension at the rear. Mazda's Japanese launch range included 2.0 and 2.5 petrol engines alongside the 2.2 diesel. These market-specific versions matter when matching replacement suspension.

Mazda announced a Japanese update in November 2014 for a January 2015 launch, including revised dampers and bushes, and AWD for the 2.2 diesel. Later cars and imported Atenzas therefore need their complete chassis and build details checked. A first-registration year is only a starting point.

GJ2FP FWD saloon

BC's N-25 manufacturer row names the 2012-on Mazda6 FWD, chassis GJ2FP. The current BR RA and RM MA choices retain a rear lower-mount spacer note, so confirm that hardware with the order. TEIN's saloon applications have their own Japanese-market engine and date restrictions.

Japanese-market estates

TEIN VSMB0-C1AA3 lists specific Atenza GJ2FW and GJ5FW estates, plus the later Japanese Mazda6 GJ2FW. Match the original market, engine, grade and build dates on the product. The GJ2AW AWD entry needs an engine-detail check before ordering; do not use its conflicting engine figure to identify your car.

UK models, AWD and changed cars

Send the full chassis, body, engine and original market for an exact check. TEIN's current shop listing is for Japanese-market cars, while BC's named N-25 row is FWD GJ2FP. Include changed arms or hubs. An AWD saloon needs confirmation beyond a supplier search result.

Keep the travel your everyday journeys need.

Read the buying advice

For a matching GJ2FP FWD car, the N-25 BR RA is the conventional front-damper choice, with the listed pillowball front and rubber rear mounts. Confirm the supplied springs and rear mounting hardware. Agree a height that clears your usual road surfaces with passengers on board; firmer mounts can also bring more noise into the cabin.

Consider an inverted front strut for repeated circuit use.

Read the buying advice

The exact N-25 RM MA option has an inverted front strut and the listed rubber rear mounts. BC uses this construction for the lateral loads carried by a strut during sustained circuit work. Its one-way control still adjusts compression and rebound together. The BR can also suit occasional track days; choose the construction around your use and confirm the spring package.

On a standard Mazda 6 GJ, the rear spring and damper are mounted separately.

Component layout only. Mounts, dimensions and adjusters vary by kit.

The GJ's rear spring sits in its own seats within the multi-link suspension, separate from the damper. At the front, the spring surrounds a MacPherson strut. This differs from the previous GH's double-wishbone front suspension.

A coilover package can keep those separate rear positions. Confirm the spring seats, adjusters and retained rubbers for the actual kit. The BC N-25 listing also flags a rear lower-mount spacer: ask for the correct hardware to be confirmed for your car. Follow that kit's supplied fitting and height-setting instructions.

Understand rear height and preload

Leave clearance for a loaded journey.

A quick measurement above a stationary tyre helps record the starting height. The fitting check also needs to cover suspension movement and steering lock, allowing for passengers and luggage. Give the fitter the exact wheels, tyre sizes and any spacers before choosing a final height.

Check the mounts, bushes and joints while the car is being assessed. Resolve wear or damaged mounting points first, then fit the matched kit and set its height. Measure the final alignment and keep the results with the spring specification and damper settings.

Wheel width and offset

Check clearance on the inner spring-platform side and at the outer arch. Provide wheel width, offset and the actual tyre model; an outward spacer changes the space at the arch. Inspect clearance through movement and steering, not just with the car parked.

Mounts and rear hardware

Confirm the mounts supplied with the exact BR, RM or TEIN package, along with reused rubbers and rear spring seats. For N-25, keep the rear lower-mount spacer check on the order. Another brand's collar dimensions are not fitting instructions for this kit.

Estate loads

An estate used for luggage or family trips needs that load considered when agreeing springs and height. Verify the wagon application first. A saloon kit reference or an empty-car arch gap cannot establish loaded clearance.

Original market and AWD

Keep the full chassis and original market with the engine and build date. A UK registration can belong to a Japanese import. Confirm AWD applications individually, especially where the engine description and chassis details do not agree.

A recorded track setup

Start with an inspected car and a measured alignment. Record tyres, pressures and damper settings, then change one setting at a time while noting the conditions. Retain a suitable road setting if the same car has to commute afterwards.

BC Racing

N-25 has current BR RA and RM MA choices for the named GJ2FP FWD application. The RM option changes the front damper to an inverted strut; both have linked compression and rebound adjustment. Confirm the supplied springs, exact mounts and rear lower-mount spacer when ordering.

TEIN

VSMB0-C1AA3 FLEX Z has twin-tube dampers, 16-level linked adjustment and the listed rubber mounts. Its current shop applications are specific Japanese-market saloons and estates, with different height rows for different versions. Check the full application and confirm the GJ2AW engine details before choosing it.

Questions about Mazda 6 GJ coilovers.

Check the details before choosing your kit.

Which coilovers are currently listed for the Mazda6 GJ?

The current range includes BC Racing N-25 BR RA and RM MA for the named GJ2FP FWD application, and TEIN FLEX Z VSMB0-C1AA3 for specific Japanese-market saloons and estates. Match the complete chassis, body, engine, build dates and original market before choosing a package.

Does the Mazda6 GJ have separate rear springs and dampers?

Yes. The rear spring has its own seats beside the damper within the independent multi-link suspension. The front uses MacPherson struts with the spring around the damper. Check the chosen kit's rear spring seats, adjusters and reused parts against its supplied instructions.

What changes between the N-25 BR RA and RM MA?

The listed BR RA has a conventional front damper with pillowball front and rubber rear mounts. The RM MA uses an inverted front strut and the listed rubber rear mounts. Both adjust compression and rebound together. Confirm the supplied springs and exact mount package for the car and its intended use.

What does the BC rear lower-mount spacer note mean?

The current N-25 listing flags a spacer at the rear lower mounting point. Ask us to confirm the required hardware with the exact car and kit before fitting. Do not substitute wheel spacers or another manufacturer's collar dimensions for the parts and instructions supplied for this package.

Can I fit the Japanese-market TEIN kit to any UK Mazda6?

The current VSMB0-C1AA3 listing covers named Japanese-market applications. UK registration alone does not confirm that the car matches one of them. Provide the original market, complete chassis, engine, grade and build date for an exact check before ordering for a UK-market car.

What should I check for an AWD Atenza?

Confirm the full AWD chassis, engine and build date. The listed TEIN GJ2AW estate row has an engine-description conflict that needs checking. For an AWD saloon, ask us to confirm a currently supplied kit against the exact chassis before ordering.

How far should I lower a GJ saloon or estate?

Use the recommended range for the exact kit and application, then agree the height around wheel clearance, suspension travel and usual loads. TEIN's recommended ranges differ between its listed versions. A mechanical maximum is not a recommended road setting, and a stationary arch gap does not establish clearance through movement.

Does carrying luggage change the setup I should choose?

Tell the fitter about regular passengers and luggage before agreeing springs and height. Allow room for the suspension to compress with that load. For an estate, confirm the wagon application as well as checking wheel, tyre and arch clearance on the finished car.

Let’s talk suspension.
