The LW's sliding doors and folding seats still make it useful. Choose the suspension around that job: identify the exact chassis, allow for a loaded cabin and keep enough travel for the roads you use.

Which MPV LW do you have?1 listed kit · 1 brandReviewed 5 November 2026

Sliding doors, a flat boot and a new platform.

A lower MPV needs to work when the rear seats are occupied and the boot is full. Tell the fitter what the car normally carries, including equipment added for camping or other conversions. Decide on a usable running height before choosing wheels to fill the arches.

The listed BC Racing N-16 package names LW5W. The wider LW generation includes other engines and market specifications, so a 1999 to 2006 registration date alone leaves too much unanswered. Keep the later LY3P and its N-14 reference separate.

Mazda introduced the second-generation MPV in Japan in June 1999, followed by its European presentation at Frankfurt that September. Front-wheel-drive packaging replaced the original MPV's rear-drive approach. Twin sliding rear doors and a third row that folded into the floor gave the new car a different shape and a useful seven-seat cabin.

The range changed during its life. Mazda's April 2002 Japanese update brought 2.3-litre four-cylinder and 3.0-litre V6 engines, revised styling and optional electric sliding doors. North American model-year descriptions and Japanese chassis codes need reading in their own market context; they are not interchangeable kit references.

A tidy set of wheels and a modest drop can suit the LW's rounded body. Plan the work around the condition of the car underneath: inspect the original rubber parts and spring seats, then check clearance with the load you actually carry. An empty-car photograph cannot establish the finished height.

LW5W: the named N-16 application

BC's V1 table names the 1999 to 2006 MPV LW5W FWD/AWD application for N-16. The current shop package is V1 VM. Provide the complete chassis identification, engine, build date and driven wheels so the named application and supplied mounting parts can be checked against your car.

Other LW engines and later revisions

A shared body shape or a matching year does not confirm the N-16 application. Send the full identification for a later 2.3, a 3.0 V6 or any car whose code differs from LW5W. Include the original market and driven wheels before arranging a kit or fitting date.

Imports and incomplete registration details

Use the chassis plate and original documents alongside the registration result. Tell us whether the car came from Japan, North America or another market. Separate the original LV and later LY generations, particularly where a UK registration date differs from the build date.

The named example is N-16 V1 VM for a confirmed LW5W application. Ask for the complete mounting and rear spring hardware list, including any original parts reused. Discuss the normal passenger load and the ramps you need to clear, then agree the springs and height with the fitter. Use the selected kit's setup instructions.

Check that the organiser accepts the car, then explain the intended sessions, tyres and running weight. The shop has one named LW package without a separately verified track specification. A stripped interior, altered drivetrain or changed mounting points needs a separate assessment. On a standard Mazda MPV LW FWD factory rear, the rear spring and damper are mounted separately.

Component layout only. Mounts, dimensions and adjusters vary by kit.

The factory FWD MPV uses front struts and a torsion-beam rear assembly. Mazda's original service drawing shows the rear coil spring on its own seat beside the damper. The spring and damper are separate components, leaving room for the low cabin floor.

Confirm the selected kit's rear springs, seats, adjusters and retained rubber parts. Follow its instructions for both spring height and damper installation. The front strut's lower-bracket adjustment does not describe every corner, and the later LY's multi-link rear uses a different assembly.

Measure for the way the car is loaded.

Record the wheel width, offset, tyre size and any spacers before fitting. The installer needs to check inner and outer clearance through steering and suspension movement, as well as the sliding doors. Include a front lip and the everyday access ramps when deciding on the final height.

An MPV used for family trips or carrying equipment needs its normal load considered. Inspect the mounts, rear spring seats and bushes before final setup. Repair worn parts, arrange alignment once the height is settled and keep the settings with the car's service records.

Passenger loads and conversions

Tell the fitter how the rear seats and boot are used. Include fixed equipment added during a conversion and stay within the vehicle's plated weight limits. Agree the required travel with that load in mind before settling on a parked height.

Wheels, tyres and sliding doors

Check the complete wheel package through movement. Wheel width, offset and spacers affect inner and outer clearance, while the sliding doors also need room to operate. Provide dimensions when asking about a proposed set of wheels.

Spring seats and original rubber parts

Inspect the rear spring seats and any retained mountings for damage or deterioration. Confirm the supplied parts list and replace worn components before adjusting the new suspension. A fresh damper does not repair a worn bush or mount.

Fitting, alignment and rechecks

Allow for fitting and any repairs alongside the kit. Ask which alignment adjustments the actual car provides, check headlight aim after lowering and follow the supplied inspection schedule. Record the final height and settings so later changes have a useful starting point.

BC Racing

N-16 is the current V1 VM reference for the named 1999 to 2006 LW5W application. BC's V1 table lists FWD/AWD, while the exact engine, chassis and mounting hardware still need checking. Other LW specifications and the later LY/N-14 remain separate enquiries.

Questions about Mazda MPV LW coilovers.

Check the details before choosing your kit.

Which MPV does the N-16 kit name?

BC's V1 application table names the 1999 to 2006 MPV LW5W FWD/AWD for N-16. The shop's current package is V1 VM. Confirm the complete chassis identification, engine, build date and driven wheels before ordering.

Does N-16 fit every 1999 to 2006 MPV?

A matching model year is not enough. N-16 names LW5W, while the generation includes different engines and market versions. Send the full identification for any other code or specification so its application can be checked separately.

Is the LY3P kit the same as the LW kit?

The later LY3P has a separate BC reference, N-14, and a different rear suspension assembly. N-16 names the earlier LW5W. Check the build date and full chassis details around the generation change.

Are the LW rear spring and damper separate?

Yes. Mazda's original second-generation FWD MPV drawing shows a separate coil spring and damper on the torsion-beam rear assembly. Confirm the replacement kit's rear hardware and follow its own spring and damper installation instructions.

Does the N-16 V1 VM kit have camber plates?

The current configuration is recorded as rubber front mounts and rubber or no rear mounts. BC's V1 table has no camber-availability marker for N-16. Confirm the exact supplied and reused mounting parts before arranging fitting.

How should I choose a height for a loaded MPV?

Discuss the usual passengers and luggage with the fitter, including equipment added during a conversion. Keep the required travel and wheel clearance, check everyday access ramps and stay within the vehicle's plated weight limits. Follow the selected kit's instructions.

Can I choose a separate track kit from this range?

The current shop has one named LW package without a separately verified track specification. Explain the event, tyres, running weight and changed hardware. Confirm organiser eligibility and a suitable complete setup before ordering for circuit use.

Can the registration finder confirm an imported LW's fitment?

The finder helps identify the vehicle. An import still needs its full chassis code, engine, original market and driven wheels checked against the kit. Include changes to wheels, mountings and the car's normal load.

Let’s talk suspension.
