The fourth-generation roadster.

Before changing an ND's suspension, identify the dampers and springs already fitted. You might want to reduce the arch gap on a standard roadster, replace an earlier owner's kit or prepare a car for regular circuit days. Decide what you need the replacement to change, then agree the height and spring package.

A UK 1.5, a 2.0 with original Bilstein dampers and an imported RF need separate application checks. Suppliers do not all describe the ND in the same way. Use the chassis plate and build date alongside the registration, especially where a listing covers more than one market.

Mazda unveiled the fourth-generation MX-5 in September 2014, with the UK car reaching dealers in August 2015. Its shorter body and compact two-seat cabin gave it a different shape from the NC it replaced. Mazda retained double-wishbone front suspension and a multi-link rear layout.

The RF followed in the UK in March 2017. Its retractable fastback roof gives it a different silhouette from the soft-top. Include RF and the original market when ordering, then check the exact application instead of relying on a generic ND title.

Mazda introduced the 184 ps 2.0 in September 2018, then added Kinematic Posture Control for the 2022 model. The 2024 UK 2.0 update brought an asymmetric limited-slip differential. Include the year and grade when choosing suspension, because factory equipment changed during the ND's life.

In 2025 Mazda reported that UK fourth-generation sales were approaching 30,000. When inspecting a car for suspension work, look for shorter springs, replacement mounts or a complete previous kit. Record the part markings and the car's present height so the fitter knows where it is starting.

Imports and prepared cars

German and US FLEX Z applications have their own conditions and height figures. Identify an import by its original market and chassis plate. For circuit preparation, add the tyres, rollover equipment and changes to the car's weight before the spring and damper specification is agreed.

AST 5300 RAC-M1207S is the current ND competition example. Rebound is adjusted separately from low- and high-speed compression, with the compression controls on remote reservoirs. Agree the springs and mounting parts for the actual car, and plan secure reservoir locations before fitting. High- and low-speed describe the speed at which the damper moves.

Component layout only. Mounts, dimensions and adjusters vary by kit.

The ND's rear coil spring sits around the shock absorber, supported by the assembly's spring seats. The multi-link suspension guides the wheel. When choosing a replacement kit, check the supplied hardware for this spring-and-damper arrangement.

Check which seats, bushes and bump stops the selected package supplies or reuses. Follow its own height and preload instructions. Mount contents and available travel depend on the selected kit and its running height.

Understand height and preload

Measure the car at its working height.

Give the fitter the wheel width, offset, tyre size and any spacers. Check clearance to the damper and outer arch through steering and suspension movement. Measure the actual car at its proposed height, including the tyre's shape and position inside the arch.

Inspect the joints, bushes and alignment hardware before fitting. Once the car has settled at the agreed height, have the alignment measured with the intended load accounted for. Keep the results with the spring details and damper settings so the next change has a clear starting point.

Wheels, tyres and spacers

Width and offset change where the tyre sits, and a spacer moves it further out. Give the fitter those measurements alongside the wheel diameter and tyre size. Check inside and outside clearance through suspension movement at the intended height.

Original Bilstein equipment

Record the existing damper and spring markings where possible. UK Sport and later grades can have different original equipment. Agree the height reference for the replacement before interpreting its quoted lowering figures.

Rollover equipment and operating weight

Tell the suspension supplier about a roll bar, cage or substantial weight removal. For circuit use, discuss the spring package alongside the tyres and operating load. Check the event organiser's separate rollover and vehicle-preparation requirements.

Adjustment access and reservoirs

Check access to front and rear adjusters once trim is refitted. A reservoir kit needs a secure location and hose routing clear of moving or hot parts. Optional EDFC also needs the correct motors, controller and installation access.

Questions about Mazda MX‑5 ND coilovers.

Check the details before choosing your kit.

Does one MX-5 ND kit cover both soft-top and RF?

Check the exact part's application. Manufacturers can identify the RF separately, and the current UK TEIN MONO SPORT entry specifies a 1500 cc engine. Give us the roof, chassis code, engine and original market so we can check the right part.

Is the UK MONO SPORT example listed for the 1.5 or 2.0?

GSMD0-71SS3 has a listed UK 1500 cc application. It has 7 kgf/mm front and 5 kgf/mm rear springs with rubber upper mounts. Ask us to check a UK 2.0 or RF separately; US and Japanese applications have their own specifications.

Which markets are listed for FLEX Z VSMD0-CUSA3?

The current listing covers German and US applications, including a separate US RF entry. The German application has axle-load limits of 645 kg front and 665 kg rear, with a parts-certificate condition. Match the original market and exact vehicle before choosing the kit.

Do all ND models have Bilstein dampers?

No. Mazda's original UK specification identifies Bilstein sports suspension on particular 2.0 Sport grades, and later RF and model-year specifications have their own equipment. Check the year, grade and the parts actually fitted; an earlier owner may have changed them.

Are the ND's rear spring and damper separate?

The rear spring surrounds the damper in Mazda's original ND assembly. Its spring seats, bushes and stops form part of that arrangement. Confirm which pieces the replacement kit supplies or reuses, and follow its fitting and adjustment instructions.

Does Kinematic Posture Control adjust the dampers?

No. Mazda's KPC applies a small brake force to the inner rear wheel during cornering. Optional TEIN EDFC controls the damping adjustment on compatible TEIN kits separately. Confirm the required motors, controller and installation access for the exact kit.

How much should I lower an ND?

Choose the height around the exact kit, roads, tyres and available travel. The UK 1.5 MONO SPORT row recommends 30 to 50 mm front and 25 to 45 mm rear reductions from its original-height reference. Those figures do not transfer to every RF or import, and the full mechanical adjustment range is not a recommended running range.

What needs specifying for a competition kit?

Provide the exact car, tyres, operating weight and relevant modifications. Agree spring rates, mounts, reservoir routing and adjustment access with the supplier. Choose the damping controls you will use when developing the setup around those tyres.

Let’s talk suspension.
