Plan the fitting work before choosing the finished height. The current N-43 application requires welding, and an early Capella's original struts and body condition need checking alongside its wheels.

The Capella behind the RX-2 badge.

A modest drop and period wheels suit the RX-2's slim chrome bumpers and compact coupe shape. Measure the proposed tyres against the arches and suspension before committing to a wheel package. On a restored car, find out which struts, mounts and axle parts it actually has.

The current BC Racing N-43 package names RX-2/616/618 RWD from 1970 to 1978, with S122A recorded. Its manufacturer application table explicitly requires welding. Arrange the conversion with a suitably experienced workshop before ordering; include the condition and identity of any original parts needed for the work.

Mazda introduced the Capella in May 1970 between the smaller Familia and larger Luce. Buyers could choose a two-door coupe or four-door saloon, with a 12A rotary engine or a 1.6-litre piston engine. Export names included RX-2 for the rotary car and 616/618 for piston-engined versions.

The early car combined front struts with a live rear axle located by four links and a lateral rod. Its rear coil springs surround the dampers. Those original arrangements help explain the parts a conversion workshop needs to inspect, particularly when a car has already had different struts or an axle fitted.

Mazda records a revised Capella in February 1974 as its second generation, followed by the next Capella/626 in October 1978. The N-43 listing spans 1970-78, but a year or badge alone cannot confirm the hardware on every market version. Include the full identification and photographs of the existing suspension when checking a later, imported or modified car.

The early RX-2 has a live rear axle located by four links and a lateral rod. Each rear coil spring surrounds its shock absorber, with its own upper seat and mounting parts.

Check the supplied rear units and the original mounting parts the conversion retains. Inspect the axle links, lateral rod and their bushes before choosing a finished height. Follow the selected package's instructions for fitting and adjustment.

Start with the original parts and the wheel clearance.

Give the workshop the wheel width, offset, tyre size and any spacers before the conversion. Check clearance at the arch and against the suspension through steering and movement. Include added lips, exhaust clearance and the entrances the car uses regularly.

Have an experienced workshop inspect the original struts and mounting areas before agreeing the required welding. Confirm the supplied and retained parts, then arrange fitting, usable running height and alignment. Keep the settings and the package's recheck instructions with the car's records.

Strut conversion and original condition

The N-43 application requires welding. Confirm the conversion instructions, any original housings required and their condition with the workshop before ordering. Existing corrosion or repaired mountings need assessing as part of that plan.

Wheels, tyres and body clearance

Provide width and offset alongside tyre size, including spacers. Check inner and outer clearance through the required movement. A period-looking wheel can still sit too far inboard or outboard for the car and chosen height.

Rear axle links and bushes

Inspect the four links, lateral rod, bushes and attachment points on the actual car. Tell the fitter about an axle conversion or previous lowering work. Settle the intended running height before assessing the complete setup.

Engine swaps and supporting work

Declare the engine and drivetrain, brake changes and normal load. Agree the fitting, alignment and recheck work alongside the springs and dampers. Follow the instructions for the exact parts supplied, especially where original hardware remains.

Questions about Mazda RX‑2 / 616 / 618 coilovers.

Check the details before choosing your kit.

Which cars does the current N-43 package name?

The listing names Mazda RX-2/616/618 RWD from 1970 to 1978, with S122A recorded. Confirm the full car identification, body, engine and original suspension before ordering, particularly on an import or previously modified car.

Does N-43 require welding?

Yes. BC Racing's manufacturer application table explicitly marks N-43 as welding required. Agree the conversion instructions, original parts and their condition with an experienced workshop before ordering.

Can I choose it for a 616 or 618 from the badge alone?

The manufacturer names 616 and 618 within the N-43 application, but the exact chassis, body and existing mounting parts still need checking. Send the full identification and details of any changed struts or axle before choosing the package.

Does the early RX-2 have separate rear springs and dampers?

Its rear coil springs surround the shock absorbers. The early factory manual shows those spring-and-damper units on a live axle located by four links and a lateral rod. Confirm the replacement package's hardware and retained mountings for the actual car.

Which mounts does the current BR RA configuration name?

The current configuration names pillowball front and rubber rear mounts. Confirm the exact supplied and retained mounting parts, including any front camber adjustment provision, against the car and package supplied.

What should I check with wider wheels?

Give the fitter the wheel width, offset, tyre size and spacers. Check clearance against both the body and suspension through steering and movement, with the intended height and normal loads. Include added lips and exhaust clearance.

Is there a separate track package recommended here?

The current catalogue has one named N-43 package. Describe the circuit use, tyres, weight and modifications so the complete preparation and suspension specification can be assessed. Competition builds also need checking against their event regulations.

Will a registration lookup identify previous suspension work?

The finder helps identify the car. Include the chassis identification and photographs or part numbers for the existing struts, mountings and axle when asking about a restored or converted Mazda. The registration result does not describe that work.
