The rounded, rotary-powered RX-7.

Tell us if your FD has a single-turbo conversion, wider wheels or a cage. Include the actual tyres and running weight with the chassis number when asking for a spring specification.

Record the existing mounts and dampers before ordering. The current range includes UK TEIN applications and a configurable BC Racing N-02 listing. Their spring packages and damping controls differ, and an FD3S label alone does not identify every part supplied in the box.

Mazda launched the third-generation RX-7 in Japan in 1991 as the Anfini RX-7. The FD has a rounded coupe body and a sequential twin-turbo rotary. Its suspension references are distinct from the earlier FC and the first-generation RX-7.

Mazda's engineers made the FD wider while reducing its length, height and wheelbase relative to the FC. Their weight-reduction programme accompanied the new powertrain. The original suspension uses double wishbones at both ends, with coil springs around the dampers and a separate rear toe-control link.

Sales ended in much of Europe by 1996, while Japanese-market development continued. The final Spirit R series went on sale in Japan in April 2002. Type A had two seats and a manual gearbox, Type B four seats and a manual, and Type C four seats and an automatic. Mazda specified exclusive Bilstein dampers for Types A and B.

Production ended in 2002. A later Japanese import can therefore have a different original specification from an earlier UK car. Identify that specification and what has since changed before replacing the suspension, especially if the existing dampers or mounts have no readable part markings.

UK-market applications

VSM32-C1SA3 FLEX Z and GSM32-71SS3 MONO SPORT each have a UK FD3S 1308 cc application. Both use rubber upper mounts, but the spring rates and recommended height ranges differ. Match the engine and market before choosing either example.

Single-turbo and circuit builds

Include the engine changes, tyres, cage and operating weight. Check the selected kit's springs and mounts against that build, then agree reservoir positions and adjuster access where needed. A road setup carried into a substantially changed car needs reassessing.

A rubber-mounted twin-tube package.

Read the buying advice

The UK FLEX Z application is VSM32-C1SA3. It uses twin-tube dampers, 10 kgf/mm front and 8 kgf/mm rear springs, and rubber upper mounts. Sixteen positions change compression and rebound together. The UK row recommends 20 to 40 mm lowering at the front and 15 to 35 mm at the rear; agree a usable height after checking the car's actual clearance.

Monotube dampers with a 12/12 spring package.

Read the buying advice

TEIN MONO SPORT GSM32-71SS3 uses monotube dampers and 12 kgf/mm springs at both ends. Like the FLEX Z example, it has rubber upper mounts and sixteen combined damping positions. Its UK recommended lowering ranges are 25 to 45 mm front and 20 to 40 mm rear. Consider those rates with the actual tyres and road use, then keep an alignment and settings record for circuit days.

BC's current manufacturer table lists N-02 ZX for the FD3S, and the ZX range has separate rebound, low-speed compression and high-speed compression controls. The current N-02 product offers ZX alongside BR RS and ER. Have us check the actual ZX mounting and spring package for your tyres, weight and circuit use. Select ZX when checking the current price; the BR amount applies to a different configuration.

The spring surrounds the rear damper.

Component layout only. Mounts, dimensions and adjusters vary by kit.

The original FD rear suspension has a coil spring around each shock absorber. Upper and lower arms locate the wheel, with a separate toe-control link. Mazda's workshop drawing identifies the spring-and-damper assembly within that double-wishbone layout.

Check the upper mounts, seats, boots and bump stops required by the replacement kit. A rubber mount and a spherical bearing change the mounting package; neither label alone establishes how camber is adjusted. Follow the FD-specific instructions and have the alignment hardware inspected before setting the final height.

Understand height and preload

Give the fitter the full wheel specification.

Wheel width, offset and spacers affect the space around the damper and beneath the arch. Include the tyre size, then have clearance checked through steering and suspension movement at the intended height. A stationary photograph cannot show every interference point.

Inspect the arms, bushes and toe-control links before the alignment. If the car has aftermarket arms, identify their adjustment range and condition. Set the height and operating load first, then retain the measured alignment with the spring specification and damper settings.

Wider wheels and body clearance

Send front and rear wheel widths, offsets, tyre sizes and any spacer thickness. Check clearance to the spring, damper and body while steering and moving the suspension. Agree the running height before booking the final alignment.

Original and replacement mounts

Identify the old damper and upper-mount package. Some Japanese editions had specific factory dampers, and previous owners may have changed the assembly. Check the selected kit's complete parts list instead of assuming a range photograph shows the FD hardware.

Arms and rear toe-control links

Have the original joints and bushes checked for wear or damage. For aftermarket arms, record the brand and usable adjustment. The fitter needs enough sound adjustment hardware to achieve the intended alignment at the chosen height.

Power changes, cage and aero

Include a single-turbo conversion, cage, substantial weight removal or added aero in the specification discussion. Give the supplier the tyres and operating weight. Plan secure remote-reservoir mounting and protected hoses where the selected package needs them.

TEIN

The UK FLEX Z and MONO SPORT examples use rubber upper mounts at both ends. FLEX Z has twin-tube dampers and 10/8 kgf/mm springs; MONO SPORT has monotube dampers and 12/12. Their recommended height ranges differ. Japan and USA entries have their own dates, grades or height figures; EDFC components are optional.

Questions about Mazda RX‑7 FD3S coilovers.

Check the details before choosing your kit.

Does this guide include the earlier FC RX-7?

It covers the third-generation FD3S. The earlier FC3S/FC3C and first-generation SA22C/FB use different application references. Check the chassis number, particularly when a product title or registration year simply says RX-7.

How do the two TEIN examples differ?

For the named UK FD3S applications, FLEX Z VSM32-C1SA3 has twin-tube dampers and 10/8 kgf/mm front/rear springs. MONO SPORT GSM32-71SS3 has monotube dampers and 12/12 springs. Both use rubber upper mounts and sixteen positions that change compression and rebound together.

What heights do the UK TEIN applications recommend?

FLEX Z recommends reductions of 20 to 40 mm front and 15 to 35 mm rear. MONO SPORT recommends 25 to 45 mm front and 20 to 40 mm rear. Match the exact UK engine/application row and check clearance on the actual car. Maximum mechanical adjustment is not a recommended running range.

Can I use the UK listing for a Japanese import?

Have the original market and grade checked separately. TEIN publishes Japanese FD3S rows, but the current MONO SPORT listing is scoped to UK-market applications. An RZ, RS or Spirit R badge does not override the product's application conditions or identify changes made since manufacture.

Did Spirit R models have different original suspension?

Mazda's 2002 release lists exclusive Bilstein dampers for Spirit R Types A and B. Identify what remains fitted to the actual car and check the replacement kit's mounts and retained parts. That original-equipment fact does not establish an available aftermarket Bilstein kit in this guide.

Are the FD rear spring and damper separate?

The original FD rear coil spring surrounds the damper in one assembly. Mazda's workshop drawing also identifies upper/lower arms and a separate toe-control link. Check which mounts, seats and bump stops the new kit supplies or reuses.

What does BC Racing ZX adjust?

The ZX range separates rebound, low-speed compression and high-speed compression adjustment. BC lists N-02 ZX for the FD3S. Confirm the actual spring and mounting package, reservoir installation and selected-option price. The parent product's BR starting amount is not the price of ZX.

Is EDFC included with the TEIN coilovers?

EDFC is optional equipment on compatible applications. Confirm the correct motors, controller and installation requirements for the exact kit. Compatibility does not mean that the electronic components are included in the coilover price.
