Mazda Tribute.
The coilover guide.
Shop the coiloversA lower Tribute still needs room for passengers, luggage and rough road surfaces. Start with the exact AWD application, then choose a height that leaves the suspension and tyres space to work.
A compact SUV with everyday road use in mind.
Upgraded wheels and a modest drop suit the Tribute's square body, but the wheel-and-tyre package needs planning with the suspension. Tell the fitter what the boot normally carries and which access ramps the car has to clear. A parked stance leaves the loaded-car questions unanswered.
The listed BC Racing N-28 package names the AWD Tribute from 2000 to 2007. Check the actual build, engine and driven wheels before ordering, particularly on imports or cars registered near a generation change. A shared platform or similar body does not make another model the same application.
Mazda launched the Tribute in Japan in October 2000 with a new SUV platform, front struts and independent multi-link rear suspension. The upright five-door body had folding rear seats and a separately opening rear window. When choosing suspension for one today, allow for the passengers and luggage it still needs to carry.
The engines and four-wheel-drive system changed during the generation. Mazda's original Japanese range included 2.0-litre four-cylinder and 3.0-litre V6 versions. Its US 2005-model update, introduced in mid-2004, added a 2.3-litre four-cylinder, revised styling and a new electronic four-wheel-drive system. Read those dates in their market context when identifying an imported car.
Before fitting the wheels and suspension, inspect the spring seats, bushes and mountings. Set a usable running height with enough travel and tyre clearance for the car's normal load. Include repairs to worn parts in the fitting plan.

AWD: the named 2000–2007 application
BC's V1 table names the Tribute AWD from 2000 to 2007 for N-28. The current shop package is V1 VM. Send the full vehicle identification, engine, build date and original market so the application and supplied mounting parts can be checked against your car.

Front-wheel drive needs its own check
The first generation also included front-wheel-drive versions. The current N-28 listing explicitly names AWD, so a matching body or year cannot establish FWD compatibility. Provide the full identification before choosing parts for a two-wheel-drive car.

Imports, updates and later generations
Use the build details alongside the registration result. Explain the original market and any uncertainty around model-year changes. Keep the later Tribute generation separate; a late registration date alone cannot identify which suspension assembly is fitted.

Changed mountings or a different vehicle
Declare drivetrain conversions, altered suspension mountings and competition plans. Do not order a Tribute kit for a Ford Escape, Maverick or another related model on platform similarity alone. Each project needs its own verified application and parts specification.

N-28 V1 VM is the current named AWD package. Confirm the exact car and mounting parts, then agree a running height around the roads, passengers and luggage it sees. Check the proposed wheels through steering and suspension movement before final alignment.
- Match the AWD application
- Check wheels with the normal load
- Agree fitting and alignment
Check event eligibility and the full preparation first.
Read the buying advice
Confirm that the organiser accepts the car and describe the proposed tyres, sessions and running weight. The shop has one named Tribute package without a separately verified track specification. Ask whether it suits the intended use and agree the brake, tyre and suspension preparation together.
- Confirm the event accepts the car
- Describe tyres and running weight
- Agree the complete preparation
Choose the specification around the build and event rules.
Read the buying advice
A changed drivetrain, stripped cabin or altered mounting point needs a separate assessment. Provide the proposed hardware and regulations before selecting springs and dampers. A road application listing alone does not establish a complete competition setup.
- Provide the event regulations
- Declare weight and hardware changes
- Plan setup and servicing
Separate springs and dampers at the rear.
On a standard Mazda Tribute first-generation AWD factory rear, the rear spring and damper are mounted separately.
Component layout only. Mounts, dimensions and adjusters vary by kit.The factory first-generation AWD Tribute uses front MacPherson struts and independent multi-link rear suspension. Its rear spring sits on its own seat beside the shock absorber. Mazda's original workshop drawings show the two components separately; the rear is not a spring wrapped around a strut.
Confirm the replacement package's rear springs, seats, adjusters and retained rubber parts. Follow its instructions for spring height and damper installation. The front strut's adjustment method should not be assumed to describe every corner, and a different-generation vehicle needs its own application check.
Understand ride height and preload
Check clearance beyond the parked stance.
Record the wheel width, offset, tyre size and any spacers. The fitter needs to check inner clearance to the suspension and outer clearance to the body through steering and suspension movement. Include a front lip, speed humps and everyday access ramps when deciding how low to go.
Allow for passengers and the usual boot load within the car's plated limits. Inspect the suspension and retained mountings before fitting, repair worn parts and arrange alignment once the height is settled. Keep the final measurements and settings with the service records.
Wheel width, offset and tyres
Give the fitter the complete wheel dimensions rather than just the rim diameter. Offset, tyre shape and spacers change the available clearance. Check both sides of the tyre through the movement the finished setup needs.
Passengers, luggage and ground clearance
Describe the normal load and any permanently added equipment. Stay within the vehicle's plated limits and retain enough travel for that use. A lower front lip also changes the clearance needed at ramps and entrances.
Spring seats, bushes and mountings
Inspect the rear spring seats, suspension bushes and any original mounts the kit retains. Confirm which parts are supplied before fitting. New dampers cannot compensate for damaged seats or worn joints.
Alignment and follow-up checks
Set the usable height before arranging alignment and ask which adjustments the actual vehicle provides. Check headlight aim after lowering and follow the kit's inspection schedule. Record changes so later adjustments have a known starting point.

N-28 V1 VM is the current named Tribute AWD 2000–2007 package. The recorded mount specification is rubber front and rubber or no rear mounts; confirm the exact supplied hardware. The V1 table has no camber-availability marker for this reference. Front-wheel-drive cars and other generations remain separate checks.

Questions about Mazda Tribute coilovers.
Check the details before choosing your kit.
Which Tribute does the N-28 kit name?
BC's V1 table names the Tribute AWD from 2000 to 2007 for N-28. The current shop package is V1 VM. Confirm the full vehicle identification, engine, build date and original market before ordering.
Does the AWD kit also fit a front-wheel-drive Tribute?
The current listing explicitly names AWD. A matching body or year does not establish FWD compatibility. Send the full details of a two-wheel-drive car for its own application check.
Are the Tribute's rear spring and damper separate?
Yes. The original workshop drawings for the first-generation AWD Tribute show a coil spring on its own seat beside the rear damper. Confirm the replacement kit's rear hardware and follow its own installation instructions.
Does N-28 V1 VM include camber-adjustable top mounts?
The recorded configuration uses rubber front mounts and rubber or no rear mounts. BC's V1 table has no camber-availability marker for N-28. Confirm the exact supplied and retained mounting parts before arranging fitting.
Can I lower the Tribute with larger wheels?
Provide the wheel width, offset, tyre size and any spacers before choosing the running height. The fitter needs to check inner and outer clearance through steering and suspension movement, including the car's normal load.
Is there a separate track recommendation in this range?
The current shop has one named Tribute package without a separately verified track specification. Explain the event, tyres, running weight and changed hardware. Check organiser eligibility and agree a suitable complete setup before ordering for circuit use.
Does the registration finder prove an imported Tribute's fitment?
The finder helps identify the vehicle. An import still needs its build details, engine, original market and driven wheels checked against the kit. Include changes to wheels, mountings and the normal load.
Let’s talk suspension.
