A two-seat Z for the new century.

A road 350Z needs room to move over uneven surfaces; a circuit car needs a setup you can measure and repeat. Both start with the same practical checks: the actual car, the wheels it wears and the suspension parts already fitted.

Keep the Z33 separate from the later 370Z. Within the 350Z range, coupe and Roadster application notes matter, and an imported Fairlady Z needs its own market check. Confirm whether the selected kit retains the separate rear spring or uses a true rear coilover.

Nissan brought the Z back with the fifth-generation Z33 in 2002. The 350Z name was used overseas; Fairlady Z continued in Japan. A front-mounted 3.5-litre V6 drove the rear wheels, with a short fixed-roof cabin and a hatch behind the two seats.

The Roadster followed, with a fabric roof and its own rear body structure. Nissan identifies the Japanese car as HZ33. A supplier may still list it under Z33, so use the body description and production period as well as the code when matching a suspension kit.

For 2007, Nissan updated the European 350Z with the VQ35HR engine, a twin intake and a revised bonnet profile. Earlier DE-powered cars and later HR cars belong in this guide, but an engine name alone does not prove that a kit fits. Record the build date, original market and any changes to the mounting hardware.

On an early 350Z now more than twenty years old, fresh dampers are only part of the work. Inspect joints, bushes and mounts, choose wheel clearance before chasing a low stance, and have the finished height aligned. For a car being stripped, caged or prepared for repeated circuit use, tell the supplier what weight and tyres the springs will have to support.

Z33 coupe

Start with the fixed-roof body, build date and original market. The UK TEIN rows distinguish their own height ranges and rear-adjuster access; AST and MOTON list their Z33 part references separately. Keep an early DE or later HR engine recorded on the order.

350Z Roadster

Choose the convertible application rather than assuming the coupe list applies. TEIN MONO SPORT GSP24-71AS3 has a specific UK Roadster 2004–2008 row. Its rear height range and damping-access note differ from the coupe, and its EDFC compatibility needs separate confirmation.

Japanese Fairlady Z or another market?

Send the chassis plate, original market and build date. Japanese, UK and US catalogue years are not interchangeable, and a shared part number can have different fitting notes. We will check the exact application before recommending a UK-listed example.

Changed arms or a developed track build?

Include any angle kit, different arms, altered spring seats or damper mounts, cage and removed interior weight. These affect the specification and clearance checks. A standard 350Z application row does not approve a combination of donor parts.

Set a usable height and plan access to the adjusters.

Read the buying advice

TEIN FLEX Z VSP24-C1AA3 is a twin-tube option for the listed UK Z33 coupe. It has 16-level combined damping adjustment, reinforced rubber upper mounts and 10 kgf/mm front/9 rear springs. The UK recommended height change is 20 mm lower to original height at each end. Rear manual damping adjustment requires shock removal, so discuss access and the optional EDFC equipment before fitting. The Roadster row remains a separate check because its published rear-height figures conflict.

A monotube option with a recorded setup.

Read the buying advice

TEIN MONO SPORT GSP24-71AS3 uses monotube dampers, 16-level combined compression and rebound adjustment, and 12 kgf/mm front/10 rear springs. Its exact UK table covers coupe and Roadster with different rear-height and access notes. Record alignment, tyre pressures and damper settings so a circuit change can be assessed. A higher spring rate does not, by itself, prove a faster or better-balanced car.

A separate rear spring, or a true rear coilover?

Separate rear spring and damperA spring between its own upper and lower seats sits beside a separate shock absorber.SpringDamper

On a standard Nissan 350Z Z33, the rear spring and shock absorber are mounted separately.

Layout only. Mounts and spring seats vary by kit.

The factory Z33 rear suspension has a coil spring on its own seats at the rear lower link, separate from the shock absorber. Nissan treats the shock and the lower-link spring assembly separately in its workshop manual. A height-adjustable kit can retain those separate spring seats.

BC identifies D-107 as the rear-integrated alternative. A true rear coilover puts the spring around the damper and carries spring load through the damper mounting path. Have the installer check the exact kit instructions, mounting condition and requirements before agreeing a conversion. The broad AST/MOTON Z33 row does not establish a spring position for every supplied package.

The spring position changes its leverage at the wheel. BC’s standard 9/8 and true-rear 9/5 figures therefore describe different layouts; a lower rear spring number does not establish a softer car. Agree the complete spring, damper and mounting specification before ordering. The kit fixes the rear arrangement.

Leave room for the tyres to work.

Give the fitter the wheel width and offset, tyre size and any spacer thickness. Check the strut or damper body, spring seat and arch through steering and suspension travel. A wheel that clears on a parked car can still make contact when it turns or rises into the body.

Inspect the suspension joints, bushes and mounts before the kit is fitted. Set the final height with the car settled, then measure alignment. If the rear layout changes, include the damper mounting areas and the instructions for that conversion in the fitting plan.

Wheel position and usable travel

Choose the stance around the actual wheels and tyres. A spacer moves the tyre towards the arch while giving more room at the inner suspension. Check clearance on both sides; wheel diameter alone leaves out the width, offset and tyre dimensions.

Arms, bushes and alignment

Tell the fitter about adjustable arms and any previous alignment changes. Have worn joints and bushes resolved before setting the finished car. Ask what adjustment is available for the intended height; a low ride height does not come with a ready-made alignment.

Rear damping access

TEIN flags rear shock removal for manual damping adjustment on these applications. Confirm the fitting sequence and access before buying electronics or booking the work. The UK Roadster MONO SPORT row does not confirm EDFC compatibility.

Competition changes and records

Include the cage, removed interior weight, tyre and any changed arms or mounting points when specifying a developed build. Keep a record of height, alignment and damping. Change one setting at a time so you can connect a difference on track to the adjustment made.

TEIN

FLEX Z and MONO SPORT have exact UK coupe rows. MONO SPORT also has a distinct UK Roadster row; FLEX Z Roadster coverage remains a check because its rear figures conflict. Compare the damper construction, supplied mounts and rear adjustment access on the actual part.

BC Racing

The manufacturer separates D-17 from rear-integrated D-107. Check the live selectable configuration, mounts and supplied springs before choosing a series. A generic title or spring-rate number does not settle the rear layout or approve a conversion.

Questions about Nissan 350Z Z33 coilovers.

Check the details before choosing your kit.

Will one 350Z kit fit both the coupe and Roadster?

Only where the exact manufacturer row covers that body. TEIN MONO SPORT GSP24-71AS3 lists the UK coupe and Roadster separately, with different rear height and access notes. FLEX Z Roadster coverage needs checking because its published rear-height ranges conflict. A generic Z33 listing is not proof of every body application.

Does a 2007 HR need a different coilover from an earlier DE car?

The engine update alone does not decide suspension compatibility. Match the build date, original market, body and actual mounting equipment to the kit application. Some listed parts cover several years, but a shared chassis code does not approve later donor parts or altered mounting points.

Does the 350Z have separate rear springs and dampers?

Yes. The factory rear spring sits on its own seats at the lower link, separate from the shock absorber. Many adjustable kits retain that arrangement. A true rear coilover puts the spring around the damper and has its own mounting and load-path requirements.

Why do the two BC rear layouts list different spring rates?

The spring sits at a different position in a true rear arrangement, so its leverage at the wheel changes. Do not use the rear spring number alone to compare the two designs. Confirm the full spring, damper and mounting specification for the car and the intended use.

Can I reach the rear TEIN damping adjusters after fitting?

The UK rows flag shock removal or detachment for manual rear adjustment. TEIN recommends optional EDFC for the listed coupe application. The MONO SPORT Roadster row does not confirm EDFC compatibility, so have its exact installation and electronics checked separately.

Can I use a UK-listed kit on an imported Fairlady Z?

Have the original market, chassis plate and build date checked against the manufacturer row. TEIN publishes separate market records, and a shared kit number can carry different notes. Do not transfer a UK coupe or Roadster recommendation automatically to an import.

Will lowering the car mean I need spacers or adjustable arms?

That depends on the wheels, tyres, available clearance and target alignment. Provide wheel width, offset and spacer measurements, then have the fitter check steering and suspension travel. Additional parts should solve a measured fitment or adjustment requirement rather than be added by default.

Should I choose the most expensive kit for track use?

Choose the application and controls you can use. Damper construction, spring specification, mounts, tyre and operating weight matter more than the price order. A competition package also needs a fitting and setup plan; it is not a guarantee of better balance or lap time.
